It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph “Rhett” Tillis, age 75. A true Florida native, Rhett was born in Tampa and was a longtime resident of Lutz. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph C. Tillis and Flora Tillis and his siblings, Bob Gillette and Hazel Thomas.
Rhett is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, JoAnn Tillis, his son, Jason Tillis, and his daughter, Jennifer Tillis. Together, they formed a close knit family, sharing a life of adventure and love. Rhett and JoAnn enjoyed boating, fishing, and Jeeping, creating countless cherished memories with their children. More than family, they were best friends, always finding joy in their life together. Rhett was a loyal family man who adored his children and cherished his role as father.
Rhett dedicated 48 years of his life to Tampa Armature Works as a proud second-generation welder. Also a master fabricator, he was known for his ability to craft anything he needed out of metal. He had a screw for everything but with his meticulous nature and desire to “get it done right”, he somehow always found a way to pick up a few more.
Rhett’s presence brought a feeling of safety and security to everyone around him. His catchphrase, “Go worry about somethin’ else, I got this'' embodied his strong, reassuring nature. Old-fashioned in only the best ways, Rhett was always welcoming and warm to anyone who entered his home or the lives of his family.
His practical wisdom and unwavering support have left a lasting impression on his family. The foundation of strength and love he built will endure forever.
Services will be held on July 9th at 2:30pm at Blount & Curry Funeral Home located at 3207 W. Bearss Ave. Tampa, Florida 33618. The family will begin to receive friends at 2:00pm. Family, friends, and loved ones will join for light fare and drinks to celebrate Rhett’s legacy. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Lung Association. https://www.lung.org
