Born on September 28, 1950, in Frankfurt, Germany, Rick was the son of Mae Anderson, originally from Kilmarnock, Scotland, and Dick Howell, a member of the US Air Force. His parents met following World War II, a union that would shape Rick’s deep appreciation for his Scottish heritage. That connection remained strong throughout his life; he and his wife Kay were fortunate to visit family in the UK many times over the years.
Rick spent much of his work life as a local truck driver but found particular fulfillment later in his career as a Records Clerk at the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office. He took pride in his work and valued the sense of purpose it gave him.
For more than three decades, Rick and Kay were devoted Florida State Football season ticket holders. He also cheered passionately for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay Rays. Whether watching games live or from home, sports brought him great joy and camaraderie.
Rick had a quiet charm and a dry sense of humor that endeared him to those around him. In his leisure time, he could often be found at the YMCA or relaxing with a word search puzzle on his lap desk. He also enjoyed long hours playing Solitaire on his computer—simple pleasures that brought him peace. Kay sped him up; while he slowed her down...they lovingly met in the middle.
Music played an important role in Rick’s life. He had a deep love for classic early rock as well as contemporary Indie Americana. Much of this shared musical journey with Kay was inspired by their favorite station, WMNF Community Radio 88.5FM.
Family meant everything to Rick. He shared 40 loving years with his wife Kay Howell. He is also remembered by his brother Doug Howell and sister-in-law Priscilla; sister-in-law Kim Greco and husband John; sister-in-law Sharon Ussery; brother-in-law Jim Bullock and wife Gladys; nieces Austyn Greco, Esther Howell, Regina Ussery, and Jessica Ussery; nephews Chad Howell, Dustin Howell, Ian Bullock, Ryan Bullock and wife Casidy, Jeremy Ussery; grands Aiden, Alaina, and Kieran; cousins Sharon McCallister, David Howell and wife Cheryl, Ed Howell and wife Jan, Patricia Adams and husband Brett, Peter Bold and wife Margaret, Lesley Birchall and husband Steve, Cindy Hammer and husband Don, Howard McCartney, Debbie Gerlach, Gary Howell and Linda Howell. He held close memories of his pre-deceased brother-in-law Jeffery Ussery, nephew Jonathan Ussery; cousin Nikki Anderson.
During Rick’s final months, he was comforted by the presence of his cousin and best friend Ed, whose companionship was a source of strength during difficult times. His niece Austyn was particularly attentive as he navigated his long illness, bringing smiles and laughter, to troubled days.
Rick’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him—He and Kay enjoyed many years of laughter and tears shared over football games, music discovered together on long drives or quiet evenings at home, and moments of kindness marked by his gentle wit.
May Richard James “Rick” Howell’s memory bring comfort to all who loved him. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday September 6, 2025, with a 10:00 AM Visitation and 11:00 AM Service at Blount & Curry Funeral Home-Carrollwood 3207 W. Bearss Avenue Tampa Florida 33618. A celebration of life at the family home will follow.
In lieu of flowers, Tribute donations may be made in Rick's honor to WMNF Community Radio Station 88.5FM or to a dear cause of the giver's choosing.
