When Thomas was a boy in Lindenhurst, Illinois, he could often be found building structures out of Lego. That childhood passion turned into a career. After receiving a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 1997, he started his career as an engineer. He ultimately became a senior project manager specializing in health care construction.
His career took him to Indiana, New York, Georgia, Virginia, Texas and, most recently, Florida. He brought his more than two decades of complex construction experience to Florida when he joined Robins & Morton in 2021 as a senior project manager. He completed BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Panama City Beach MOB and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital MRI replacement. He most recently worked at BayCare Hospital Manatee.
He was proud to help create buildings that ultimately provided space for physicians, nurses and other health care workers to provide vital care for people in each of the communities that he lived and worked. His coworkers said that Thomas was a top-notch senior project manager and a great problem solver with a strong work ethic. He was known for his kindness and authenticity. Thomas was always smiling and willing to help others. He put others at ease and was a genuine friend to many.
In 2009, he received the Melvin Award from McCarthy Construction for his relentless pursuit of quality through innovation, honesty and integrity. In 2017, Walsh Construction awarded him the 1st Place MMW II National Safety Award for the UTMB Biocontainment Critical Care Unit.
While he was passionate about work, Tom was even more passionate about his family. He loved floating in the pool with his wife and children, where they enjoyed making their own lazy river. Thomas’ daughters have fond memories of making homemade dinner rolls and pasta with their dad and of him blasting Pink Floyd music with them. His big heart and fun-loving personality made family time together special, including outings to movies and to Portillo’s where he was known to get a Chicago hot dog or a dipped Italian beef sandwich with giardiniera peppers.
His daughter Sara will miss staying up late talking about life and smoking a cigar with him. She’ll also miss driving in his Corvette listening to “Poker Face.” His daughter Ashley will miss playing chess with him.
Thomas loved roller coasters. He also enjoyed taking his children to Disney World and watching smiles on their faces on their favorite ride when they were younger – Pirates of the Caribbean.
The freedom of hopping on his Triumph motorcycle and riding fast was also a favorite pastime. He even enjoyed the challenge of the constant repair that had to happen to enjoy those freeing rides.
Thomas is survived by his wife Mindy Albert (nee Schmidt); daughters Sara Albert and Ashley Albert; a son Adam Schmidt; his parents Bruce and Mary Albert; a sister, Tanya (Scott) Henry; nephews Emmett and Griffin Henry; niece Annika Henry and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services for Thomas will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025 at Blount & Curry Funeral Home Carrollwood Chapel in Tampa. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a service beginning at 3 p.m.
