Alan graduated from SUNY Fredonia in 1969 and then joined the US Airforce. He served 4 years including a year in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He then earned a Masters in Library Science at the University of Kentucky. Alan worked as a librarian for the Hillsborough County Library System for 31 years at various locations. Alan participated in the Big Brother/Big Sister program for many years. Alan loved baseball, the Yankees, jazz, book talks, reading, running and having an IPA with his friends.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Annmarie Nichter; his brothers, Jerry Nichter (Kim), Paul Nichter (Karen), and David Nichter (Marge); and his nieces and nephews, Tricia, Craig, Zachary, Sarah, Chelsea, Aimee, Gabriel, and Mallory.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the Teal Team at Lifepath Hospice and to the staff at the Legacy at Highwoods Preserve for their care and dedication. Also thank you to his friend Mike Donohue who visited him faithfully for 3 ½ years.
Visitation will be held at Blount & Curry, Terrace Oaks Chapel, 12690 N. 56th Street, Temple Terrace, FL 33617, on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 2 - 4 pm, and 6 – 8 pm. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at the Catholic Student Center at USF, 13005 N. 50th Street, Temple Terrace, FL 33617, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 10:00 am. A Committal Service with Military Honors will take place at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513, on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 12:30 pm.
