Herb graduated from Lee High School (1955) in Jacksonville, Florida and entered the Navy after graduation. He served two years, earning honors for graduating first in his class from airman school, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Norman, Oklahoma.
After graduating from the University of Florida, College of Engineering (BSME 1961), he worked for Union Carbide for six years, where he earned his PE license. Ultimately, he accepted a job with Anheuser Busch in Tampa, where he worked until his first retirement. He continued his professional Engineering career and helped design many high-profile projects in Tampa Bay.
Herb lived a full and active life full of varied interests. He loved to fish and traveled the world pursuing his passion, from bone fishing in the Keys to fishing for Peacock bass in the Amazon. His favorite fishing spot, however, was in Alaska. He returned year after year.
He also loved to hunt, a sport he began in his high school years. His love of hunting also took him traveling around the world. He hunted from Cape Canaveral to British Columbia to Scotland. He served as co-chairman for the North Tampa Ducks Unlimited chapter for several years and was chairman in 1997.
His love of hunting turned him into an excellent shot. As a result, he became very active in shooting sporting clays. He assisted General Norman Schwarzkopf in hosting Team Remington in several charity events. This involvement led to him receiving an offer from Remington Shooting School to be an instructor, a position he loved very much.
He and his wife, Myra, also loved to travel. The two of them loved to go anywhere, but their favorite places were Alaska, where they loved to fish and eat salmon, Napa Valley, where they loved to drink fine wine, and Scotland, where they just loved to be.
Herb’s greatest passion, though, was anything Gators. He was inducted into the University of Florida’s Grand Old Guard in 2021. This induction recognized his continuing support of Florida Gator Athletics for fifty years. For many of those years, his parking spot was the spot to be before and after a football game. Three generations of his family and all of their friends came together every home game to share in his love for his Gators.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the University of South Florida Catholic Student Center, 13005 North 50th Street, Tampa.
His favorite charity was Southeastern Guide Dogs. If desired, flowers can be sent to Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club, 200 Inverness Avenue, Temple Terrace, attention to Sandy Baez.
