Callie Estelle Powell

Services for Callie Estelle Carroll Powell will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, Feb 11, 2011 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel in Temple. Her nephew Rev. Eugene Carroll will officiate. Mrs. Powell passed away peacefully Monday, Feb 7, 2011, at the age of 96 in a Houston hospital.

Callie Estelle Carroll was born August 29, 1914 at home on the family farm near Killeen, TX. She was the baby of eleven children born to James Nathanial Carroll and Annie Delores Murphy Carroll. As a child she loved reading, needle work, sewing and memorizing Bible verses, all hobbies which carried into her adult years. She married Howard B. Powell, Nov 26, 1931 (Thanksgiving Day) in Gatesville, where they made their first home.

In addition to raising a family Callie owned and operated a beauty shop in St. Louis for several years, was the dorm coordinator at St Louis School of Pharmacy, and later, the Housing Director at School of the Ozarks. After retirement she enjoyed traveling in a motor home throughout the United States. She lived in Temple from 1976 to 1998 when she moved to Houston with her daughter. In Temple she was a member of Temple Bible Church and the Canyon Creek Church of Christ.

Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years on August 6, 1994, and by one son, Joe Eddie Powell June 19, 2010 and by her ten siblings.

Survivors include her daughter Bonnie Werling Davis and her husband Joe of Houston; five grandchildren, Susan Boessling, Nancy Werling, DeeDee Addison, Jimmy Powell, and Jeffrey Powell; and five great-grandchildren Abby Boessling, Cody Powell, Tyler Powell, Daniel Powell, and Christopher Powell.
