

Graveside services for Doris Elain Schurman Sawyer, 80, of Temple, will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Bellwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Wilburn Michalk will officiate. Services have been entrusted to Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Temple. Mrs. Sawyer died Wednesday, August 25, 2010 in a Temple hospital.
Doris was born Nov. 23, 1929 in Bastrop County, TX to Ben E. Schurman and Agnes Mary Brahm Schurman. She married Jamie Sawyer in Marlin, on Dec 18, 1948. She had lived in Temple all of her married life. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church from 1951 to her passing. Doris began her higher education at the Scott and White School of Nursing in August 1947 and graduated in June 1951. She was an officer and chairman of numerous committees for the Scott & White School of Nursing Alumni Association. Mrs. Sawyer was a long time member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Over the years she served as the local President, Zone Chairman and Delegate to the National Convention. She was also a member of the Temple Garden Club.
Mrs. Sawyer was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald Logan Sawyer who was born March 13, 1957 and passed March 21, 1957.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Jamie Sawyer of Temple; two daughters, Sandra Smithwick and her husband Gary, of Temple and Jeanette Johnson and her husband Keith, of The Grove; seven grandchildren, Shari Smithwick, Shelly Smithwick, Amy Deiterman, Emily Proctor, Christina Johnson, Robert Johnson, and Kelly Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Chase Deiterman, Gavin Deiterman, and Emelia Proctor; and one sister Dolores Mayfield of Alvin, TX.
