Just learned of the passing of friend and colleague Dr. Jack Shale. I had the pleasure of working with him as he served the people of San Diego County as the Medical Director of the County’s Psychiatric Hospital ; during most of his tenure he called me boss (I was the County MH Director) which always cracked me up since I pretty much stayed out of his way when he went about his job often at tornado speed . He was straightforward about what needed to change in the system to improve the lives of those he served , always with passion and compassion and, yes, with a sense of humor …I will always be grateful for his stewardship , Alfredo Aguirre

I worked with Jack at Balboa Naval Hospital on the Physical Evaluation Board. Jack was the senior medical officer, and I was the senior Marine on the board. For two years we worked out together in the gym and decided compensation claims for disabled vets. Jack was above all a man of impeccable character. He was mentally, physical and spiritually fit. He was a leader in every sense of the word. I was saddened to learn of his passing over two years ago. The last time we saw each other was before he moved to Texas. He was working as a tour guide on the USS Midway. He looked great. 
We will all pass from this life to the next. Knowing Jack's deep faith, I am sure he is smiling down on all of us, especially his family. He was a good man. I miss him.

I just learned of Jack’s death. He was a dear and loyal friend for over 50 years.  My condolences to his family and all who knew and loved him.

I am saddened to learn that my  pal Jack Shale has passed away. In 2002 I invited Jack to co-teach a Mental Health Law Clinic  with me. It was the beginning of a great friendship that lasted for several years. 
When he introduced me to his then wife, Jayne, I told her I wanted to shake the hand of the woman married to the man whose motto should’ve been, “If you’re living on the edge, you’re still taking up too much space.” 
Jack had an incredible intellect. His command of the English language, his knowledge of medicine and his incredible wit  livened up many meetings. But Jack wasn’t always the most amiable guy in the room. I confess to having to kick him under the table more than a handful of times. 
As formidable as Jack could be,  I also knew of his numerous quiet acts of kindness and generosity. 
Jack, you were an E ticket ride. Rest in peace.

In 1967, Jack Shale (Mr. Shale) was my 7th grade teacher at Holy Spirit School in Pequannock, NJ. Thirty years later, and 3,000 miles away we were reunited in San Diego Superior Court where I was working and he was practicing legal skills having just earned his JD. "What are the odds?" we repeatedly asked over the years we kept in touch.  A U.S. Navy Captain, Psychiatrist MD, an attorney, and he had clocked lots of miles on his Harleys! He told me when he turned 50 y.o. he didn't know what else to do so took up playing the banjo! What an incredible life!

John was briefly a medical student at the University of Geneva where I knew him in the late 60's.  I attended his wedding to Michèle Magnin then.
We looked him up in San Diego where he lived, and were sorry to learn that he had been divorced.  He told us of a very exciting life of accomplishment.  We met his Harley motorcycle companion Jaynne.  It is ironic that he would develop a progressive dementia.
He drove his BMW motorcycle across the country to Temple TX and stopped for the night to stay with us in Abilene in 2008.  We saw a little of him after that for a while.
There is so much more I could tell, but the box is so small.
Michèle told me he had died and we send our deepest sympathies to all.
