

Our beloved sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully to be with our Lord and Savior to her new eternal home in Heaven.
Lela Jo worked for several years and retired from “Philips Petroleum” in Odessa, TX. She attended Odessa College and worked at a jewelry store. Lela was also a contestant as a beauty queen while in college. She was a faithful member of Eisenhower Church of Christ in Odessa, TX. In her later years, became a member of Salado Church of Christ. Most people knew and called Lela Jo “Granny”.
Lela Jo was preceded by her parents Jackie and Tolbert Newgent, brother William “Lynn” Newgent”, brother-in-law Leo Hagler, nephew Larry Hagler and cousins Tim and Gayle Corntassel.
Lela Jo was survived by her sister Bobbie Jean Hagler, daughters Sharon “Sherry” Kay Sewell and Cynthia “Cindy” Lou Davis, son Melvin LaRay “Larry” McElroy and wife Michelle McElroy. She was also survived by her grandchildren Troy Leon Felts, Jessica Thiele, Ralph Morton, Patrick Sewell, Robert “Bobby” Allen Middleton, Trisha Middleton, Jason McElroy, Lauren Rine and Bryce McElroy. In addition, she was survived by her great-grandchildren Daisy Jo, Lucas and Logan Felts, Brayden and Bradley Middleton, Madison, Samantha and Audrey Thiele, Ralph Morton Jr., Tabor and baby girl Doli, niece Linda Hagler and cousins Pamela, Tommy, Terri, Jimmy Paul and Tammy Corntassel and Gary, David Lee and Barbara Newgent. She had numerous close friends and family that she adored as well.
Visitation will be be held from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, Temple, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, Temple, with burial to follow at Greathouse Cemetery, Temple, Texas.
