September 22, 1937 – August 11, 2024
Born Maria Elena Fay to Otto and Rosa Helena Fay in Neuhausen auf den Fildern, Germany, Maria witnessed the devastation of a war-torn country during her early years. Despite this, she carried an enduring love for life and a deep passion for exploring the world.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Oskar, her sister Elfriede, and her niece Cornelia, and recently her “favorite” Son-in-law Art Campbell. She is survived by her beloved sister Erna. Maria leaves behind her devoted “sweetheart”, Sergeant Major Ronald Thomas, with whom she shared a lifetime of love. Together, they raised three wonderful children. Kurt Thomas (married to Karen), Eddie Thomas (married to Cheri), and Karen Campbell (who is recently widowed). Maria and Ron are blessed with five loving grandchildren: Sara, Jenny, Eddie Jr., Brandon, and Stephanie, and three great-grandchildren: Jamie, Michael Jr., and Madalynn. Maria cherished being called “Oma” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maria also leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews in Germany and the Southern US.
Maria met Ron while he was stationed in Germany and it was love at first sight. They married and built a beautiful, loving family. Maria took pride in creating a home filled with beauty and comfort. She remained in touch with friends across the world, whether they were lifelong companions or strangers she befriended on cruises, in stores, or anywhere life took her.
Being an Army wife required many sacrifices, some of which weighed heavily on her, but Maria’s love for life never waned. She imparted this strength and worldliness to her children, ensuring they were well-prepared to face the world. Those who knew Maria likely have countless stories of her infectious smile and her ability to bring laughter to any situation.
In recent years, Maria and Ron found solace in returning to church. During the pandemic, they watched services on TV and were grateful to return to in-person worship. The fellowship and connection with others brought Maria great comfort.
Maria and Ron were avid travelers, and they shared a particular love for cruising, and it is rumored they could have singlehandedly been responsible for keeping a few cruise lines in business. Maria’s enthusiasm for life extended even to her favorite local spots, like Taco Casa, where she delighted in recommending the food to friends and family. Gifting this gave her joy.
Maria loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
Proverbs 31:25-28
"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."
