Carol Sue Howard

Carol Sue (Alter) Howard, 76 passed away at home surrounded by her family on June 24, 2019. She was born December 27, 1942 in Sherman, Texas to John Charles Alter and Rosemary (Smith) Alter. Carol graduated from Otter Creek High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University. She obtained her Master’s degree from Indiana State University. She taught elementary school for 38 years in the Vigo County School Corporation, spending the majority of her teaching career at Rio Grande Elementary School. Carol was married to her high school sweetheart, Darrel R. Howard, for 50 years. Carol and Darrel shared a love for family and for horses. Together they owned and operated Darrel Howard Training Stables for over 40 years. Carol enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters Jennifer (Howard) Brackney of Plainfield, IN and Julie (Howard) Chadwick of Terre Haute; two granddaughters Grace Brackney and Taylor Brackney both of Plainfield; cousin Jan Hanrahan of Terre Haute; brothers-in-law Dale (Martha) Howard of Tomball, TX and Larry (Peggy) Howard of Avon, IN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, and brother-in-law Donald Howard. A memorial service will be on Monday, July 1, 2019 at 6:00 PM at Roselawn Funeral Home with Rev. Karen Taylor officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 6:00PM on Monday at the funeral home. In-lieu-of flowers the family requests that contributions in Carol’s name be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400-8th Avenue, Terre Haute, IN 47804.
