

Clarence R. “Soup” Harris, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away on Monday, January 2 at Regional Hospital. He was born on August 29, 1926, in Terre Haute, to Clarence R. and Mary Harris. He married Mildred “Millie” Hickenbotham and she preceded him in death in January 2, 2007. Soup had been a fire fighter for the City of Terre Haute since July 4, 1958 and retired in 1980. He then became the assistant superintendent of the waste water treatment plant, retiring in 1997. He was a long-time precinct committee man for Precinct C of the Fourth Ward and also served as an Indiana State Delegate. He was honored in 1998 for loyal service to the Democratic Party. Soup served on the Board of Public Works and Safety, Board of Zoning Appeals, and as an I.O.S.H.A. Designee and Safety Director for the City of Terre Haute. He was a member of the Retired Police and Fireman Association, International Association of Firefighters, Indiana Firefighters Association, German Oberlandler Club, and Wabash Senior Citizens. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed travelling and casinos.
Soup is survived by his three step-daughters, Patricia J. Denny and her husband Harley, Bonnie L. Butler and her husband Richard, and Sharon R. Turner; two step-sons, Farris C. Ellinger, Jr and his wife Sherri. and Ricky A. Ellinger and his wife Kay; grandchildren, John C. Hensley and his wife Debbie, Paul A. Hensley and his wife Valarie, Tracy L. Hubbard, Kimberly L. Mays and her husband Scott, Patricia R. Kull and her husband Chris, Shawn M. Turner and his wife Tiffany, Lieutenant Colonel Michael S. Turner and his wife Heather, Vanessa J. Hendrick and her husband Mitch, Tyler C. Ellinger and his wife Jenny, Zachary W. Ellinger, and Jessica S. Owens and her husband Max; and eleven great-grandchildren, a nephew, Bill Harris and his wife Linda, and nieces, Donna Bredeweg and her husband Dick, Patty Blye, and Connie Bell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons, Donald R. Harris and Jim Lee Harris, and one brother, Donald Harris.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. and from noon until 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5 at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 5 at the funeral home with Reverend Bill Herb officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
