

Donald Lee Herman, 80, of Terre Haute, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at Union Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on November 5, 1935, in Terre Haute to the late William and Eva (Shepherd) Herman. He married his childhood sweetheart, Erma Meehan on July 30, 1956 and together they raised 5 sons.
Donald is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Erma Herman of Terre Haute; sons, Dennis Herman and wife Aleska of Terre Haute; Patrick Herman and wife Andrea of Terre Haute; Mark Herman and wife Ann of Ft. Wayne, and James Herman of Terre Haute; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Hughes and husband Bob.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, David Herman in 2001, and sisters, Dorothy McEntire, Irene Rogers, and Ruth Herman.
Donald graduated from Otter Creek High School in 1953. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served for 20 years. He served two tours in Vietnam and was stationed in several other locations. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant. Don went to work for GTE in Terre Haute for 12 years. He also worked for several other companies to stay busy.
Don had a passion for flying his airplane. He enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Citizen Center and the Sycamore Country Club. He and Erma enjoyed a competitive game of Scrabble many evenings at home.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 at Roselawn Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 25, at the funeral home. Don will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by American Legion Post 104. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.roselawnfuneralhome.net
