Jerry Lee Swift, 68, died peacefully in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on July 9th, 2025, surrounded by friends and family. He was born September 4th, 1956, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Doris Swift and James L. Swift.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Doris Swift; his father, James L. Swift; and his loving wife and mother to his children, Joanne Swift.
He is survived by his children, James R. Swift and Rachel Doa (Michael); grandchildren, Josie and Noelle Doa; siblings, James M. Swift, John Swift (Nancy), and Lisa Swift; stepmother, Donna Moss Swift; aunts, Connie Mallory-Johnson and Barbara Harris; nieces, Laura Dunbar (Marcus), Mackenzie Swift, and Madison Swift (Derrick Castro); nephews, Caleb Swift (Renee), Sabastian Swift, William Swift, and Matthew Swift; as well as many extended family members and countless friends who loved him dearly.
Jerry lived his life by the motto he instilled in his children: do one thing at a time, do it exceptionally well, and then move on.
He began supporting his family at the age of fourteen and put himself through college by working three jobs. He graduated from Indiana State University, where he met his wife, Joanne. Jerry then went on to spend his career at the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) and later at Lacks Enterprises, saving countless fingers, toes, and lives.
After retiring for the second time, Jerry pursued his favorite hobbies: flying, gardening, traveling in his motorhome, and enjoying a Sam Adams with his neighbors on Friday nights.
There were many things Jerry did exceptionally well in his life, but none was more admirable than raising his two young children alone after their mother died, suddenly and unexpectedly, at age 39. Jerry’s greatest pride was being a father. It was his one thing, his one focus: ensuring that his children were happy, healthy, safe, and loved. He was a generous and caring man who will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held in celebration of Jerry’s life on July 30th, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Terre Haute, Indiana.
