Judith Ann Summers, 75, passed away March 13, 2019 at Union Hospital with her family by her side. She was born May 20, 1943 to Jack and Marjorie Cox Summers (Krogh) in Terre Haute, Indiana. Judy graduated from Elk Point High School in South Dakota in 1961. From there, she received her BS from Indiana State University in Elementary Education with endorsement in Library Science in 1965. She then went on to achieve her MS in Educational Media from Purdue University in 1969 and also accomplished getting 30 hours over her Master’s at Indiana State University. She worked as a librarian at Richmond Community Schools from 1965-1966. After that, she spent 30 years as a Media Specialist at Fuqua Elementary School. Those 30 years also included some time at Fayette Elementary, Pimento Elementary, and Maple Avenue. Judy retired as the Coordinator of Media and Technology of Vigo County Schools in 1998. Judy received an Outstanding Young Woman award in 1980, was a life member of the National Education Association, life member of the Vigo County Retired Teachers Association, a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, ISTA-R, a friend of the Vigo County Library, an Alpha Delta Kappa Alpha Lambda Chapter Silver Sister in 2011, a part of the Vigo County Historical Society, a life member of the Educational Heritage Association of Vigo County and served as the financial treasurer. She grew up in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point, SD. She joined the Seelyville United Methodist Church in 1969. Judy is survived by her brother, James (Peggy) Summers of Terre Haute; sister, Barbara S. Krogh of Seattle, WA and Jim Burrows of Seattle, WA; niece, Alison Kay (Kevin) Summers Dykes and children, Alex and Audrey Dykes; nephew, Joseph (Crystal) Summers of Byesville, OH; great nephew, Cameron Joseph (Kristen) Summers of Byesville, OH; great niece, Caitlyn Jean Summers of Byesville, OH; uncle, Alan Keith Summers and Martin Portnoy of Sarasota, FL; cousin, Brian (Marty) Johnson and daughter, Jennifer of Maudlin, SC; and special cousins, Carol and Martin Jorgenson of SD, Dorothy Gunion of IA, and John Gunion of SD; Lois (Allan) Nelson of Omaha, NE; and Don (Rose) Thompson of Dunlap, IA. She is preceded in death by her father, Jack Summers (2015); her stepmother, Mable Summers (2013); her mother, Marjorie Krogh (2003) of Elk Point, South Dakota; her stepfather, James Krogh (2002) of South Dakota. Visitation will be Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Seelyville United Methodist Church from 4:00pm-7:00pm. The funeral service will be at 11:00am on Monday, March 18, 2019 at the Seelyville United Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow with burial at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, any donations given will go to the Seelyville United Methodist Church and the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point, SD.
