Marjorie Lynne Marquis

Marjorie Lynne (Ward) Marquis, 91, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020. She was born April 15, 1929 to Thomas and Marjorie (Smith) Ward in Riley, Indiana. She was a 1947 graduate of Riley High School. Marjorie was a long-time resident of Otter-Creek Township and active in the programs of her Home Economic Club and Otter Creek Democrats. Earlier she attended Burnett Church and more recently North Terre Haute Christian Church. She was a gifted seamstress and a long-time employee of Packard Shirt Company. She was proud to be the wife of a WWII Navy veteran and always displayed the flag. As a young girl, she grew up on the family farm in Riley Township. She enjoyed the horses, cows, and other barnyard animals and looked forward to summers and swimming in the farm’s pond. She married Gene Marquis on April 23, 1953; they enjoyed 55 years together and traveling to many states, especially Minnesota in the summer and Florida in the winter. Marjorie enjoyed working in her yard tending flowers and the lawn. She also loved cats, her most recent being Sammy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene D. Marquis, who passed on March 4, 2008; her son, R. Wayne Wiley Marquis; step-sons, Donald Marquis, Terry Marquis; sisters, Hilda Bruner, Jessie, Mary Ann, Shirley; and brothers, Keith and Jack. Marjorie is survived by her granddaughter, Olivia Wiley (Scott) Benthin; grandson, Aaron Wayne Wiley; great-granddaughter, Cassandra Selene Benthin; great-grandson, Alexander Jason Benthin all of Marcellus, Michigan; her step-grandchildren, Joe Gwinn, Donna Marquis Taylor, Donald Marquis Jr., Robbie Marquis, and Missy Marquis. Also surviving are her nieces Joan Bruner Ryan Harrold, Lila Ward Camp of Alaska, Sherry Ward Stith of Alaska; her sister-in-law, Velma Marquis Newton; nieces and nephews including Cindy Ryan Durham, Tina Ryan Chadwick, Patrick J. Ryan, John Newton, Joe Newton, Dan Newton, Chris Newton, and Margi Newton Byram to whom she was known as Aunt Fronie and Aunt Marge. The last few years were difficult having to give up her family home and driving. During her time at Cannon Inn and Meadows Manor North, she was blessed to have special attention from the staff. The family wholeheartedly thanks the dedicated staff of Cannon Inn and Meadows Manor North. Visitation for Marjorie will be Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home from 1:00pm-2:00pm.
