Mary McKee, age 86, of Blanford, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the Vermillion Convalescent Center. She was born May 25, 1935 to Milton L. and Carsa Opal (Norris) McKee in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Mary was a graduate of Garfield High School in the class of 1954. She cherished her time with her high school friends with monthly lunch dates. Mary helped her parent's with their restaurant, Pats BBQ. She was known as the family’s Official BBQ chef for many years. Mary also worked at Bennett Foods. In the late 1950's Mary applied for seasonal help at The Root Store. When her stellar work ethic proved she was an exceptional employee, The Root Store hired her full time. Mary retired from The Root Store after 43 years of devoted service. Retirement couldn't keep her down, so she worked at Vigo County 911 for a few years.
She is survived by her twin sister, Marilyn J. McKee; her brother, James McKee (Myong); along with her nieces and nephews: Cindy (Willie) Wilson, Beth McKee Donna, Will Mckee, and Tina Beard. She is also survived by her special niece, Kathi Taylor; great nieces and nephews: John (Gena) Olson, Stefanie (Angie) Olson, Rebecca McKee, and Blake McKee; and her great-great nephew and niece; Zane and Faedra Olson.
Mary was a gifted seamstress. She made almost all her nieces' clothes, including their Barbie doll clothes. She was also a very talented artist. She shared her artistic abilities with The Root Store retirees by making themed gifts for the spring and Christmas luncheons. She enjoyed making ceramics, flower arrangements, towel jackets, fall sweatshirts, and countless small craft items. Her favorite thing to do was go to Grand Traverse Pie Company and order a slice of cherry pie. She always made sure when she had her Mexican baked potato that Steve added just a little more chili.
Sometime in 2017 we noticed Mary wasn't as sharp as she once was. Her doctor diagnosed her with early onset Alzheimer’s. We began prescribed medication, and tried to engage her to slow the progression of this debilitating disease. Alzheimer’s tightened it’s grip and wasn't letting go.
She is preceded in death, parents; her brother, Robert L McKee; sister, Nancy Clayton; nephew, Robert R. McKee; her great nephew, Brycen McKee; and Rob Donna.
