Mary Perucca, 91, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, at Highland Park Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted mother to Melissa, J. Alan (Dawn), and Linda (Henry) Daroszewski; a cherished Granny to Vanessa and Joey; a beloved sister to Dorothy Witty (widow of Dayton), Helen Bridgewater (widow of Ed), Clarabell Wright (widow of Charles) and Joann Hoff (John); and a fond aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her soulmate and husband, Joseph, and her dear sister, Helen. Born on January 4, 1934, in Terre Haute, Indiana as one of 5 girls to Henry and Clara Hull Handick, Mary’s life was marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.
Mary graduated from Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University) with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics, which led her to a fulfilling career in teaching. It was during her time at Indiana State that she met the love of her life, Joseph. The two married in 1959 and built a beautiful life together.
With Joseph, Mary co-founded Perucca Catering Service in Terre Haute, becoming the go-to team for wedding receptions, special events, fabulous birthday cakes, Christmas cookies and decorated sugar Easter eggs. Known for their impeccable service and delicious food, Mary and Joseph made lasting memories for countless families. In 1979, Mary transitioned to a new chapter, accepting a position as the Food Service Director for the Vigo County School Corporation, where she worked until her retirement in 1993.
Mary’s talents and passions extended beyond her professional life. She was an exceptional seamstress and loved creating handmade treasures for her family. She shared her talent for sewing with the community by making 100's of puppy pillows for young patients at Union Hospital, where she volunteered. Her kitchen was a place of love and abundance, where no guest ever left hungry. Mary had a knack for setting stunning tables, beautiful flower arrangements, and preparing unforgettable meals, ensuring every occasion felt special.
A dedicated volunteer at the McMillan Adult Day Care Center in Terre Haute, Mary found joy in giving back to her community. Later in life, her greatest joy came from her role as a grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and treasured every moment she spent with them. Her love also extended to three granddogs, Vinny, Mario, and Luca that would all run to her, seeking the best spot on her lap. Mary’s kindness, creativity, and devotion will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home in Terre Haute, IN, on January 21, 2025, from 11:00am to 1:00pm, followed by a service celebrating Mary’s life. Interment will take place at Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Mary’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org), honoring her compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others.
