Jane was born to Willie “Ray" Hughes and Lillie Mildred Hughes on February 9, 1941 in Scranton, Arkansas. She went on to marry Kenneth Ross Shorter on January 8, 1960.
Jane was an entrepreneur. She started her own upholstery business in her home and grew it into a very successful business, Shorter Upholstery. Shorter Upholstery flourished and grew for more than 40 years, culminating regionally respected name.
Jane was a member of the Terre Haute Church of God, the Park Place Ladies, and formerly a member of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce. She was very humble and enjoyed volunteering in the community. Jane volunteered at Helping Hands, sewed over 6,000 masks during covid, and would crochet and donate baby items to the Crisis Pregnancy Center and Nursery at Union Hospital. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, canning, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved and grew all kinds of flowers.
Jane is survived by her daughters Carol Stewart (Alex Sivira) of Bradenton, FL, Robin Collins (Martin) of Terre Haute, IN, and Angela Padgett (Mike) of Newburgh, Indiana; grandchildren Forrest Gholston (Meredith), Madison Graham (Michael), Ross Padgett, and Maren Padgett; great-grandchildren Breckon Gholston and Rhodes Graham; siblings Billy Ray Hughes, James Ray Hughes, Marron Ann Hughes, Sue Johnston, and Betty Lois Brown; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years Kenneth Ross Shorter; parents Willie Ray Hughes and Lillie Mildred Hughes (Harrison); and siblings Harlen Hughes, Frances Hughes, Daisy Judd, and Armenda Roberts.
A visitation will be held Thursday, November 6, 2025 at Roselawn Funeral Home from 11 am to 1 pm with services to immediately follow. Jane will be laid to rest beside her husband Kenneth at Roselawn Memorial Park.
