

He graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1941, and began working on the Pennsylvania Railroad as a brakeman. Following a year and half on the railroad, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy. Three of his brothers served in World War II. While serving in the military, he was an X-ray technician at a hospital on an island in the harbor of Portsmouth, N.H., known as the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. While in the Navy and at the hospital, he met a lovely lady, Mildred Skofield, a secretary who was working as a civilian in the Navy’s Ship Service Department. He returned home to Indiana after three and a half years in the Navy in February of 1946. Ray and Mil were married May 22, 1946. In the fall of 1946, he attended Indiana State Teachers College, graduating three years later in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. His first position was as a teacher and head basketball coach at Walnut Grove High School in Hamilton County for eight years. He was in administrative positions as high school principal and later superintendent in four school districts, eventually retiring in 1987 after 40 years in education. Through the years, he served in many organizations, including the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, the First United Methodist Church and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
He had several hobbies, including horseback riding, reading and he and his son Doug were private pilots. They owned a Piper aircraft with two friends. He also played semi-pro baseball and basketball for many years.
He is survived by his son, Douglas Ray and wife Julie (Cataline) Rogers of South Riding, Va.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Joan (Rogers) and husband Donald Dagnall Jr., and Vincent Thomas and wife Laura (Swank) Rogers, all of Akron, Ohio; and three great-grandchildren, Catalina, Cayden and Dominic. Other survivors include nieces, Vicki Lynn (Rogers) Certain; Ruth Rae (Rogers) and husband Jack Schroeder; Jane Ann (Rogers) and husband Gary Williams, Colleen Rogers, and Debbie Rogers; and nephews, Dale Charles Rogers and wife Joy, and Jack Rogers; He also is survived by his sister-in-law, Jane (Phipps) Skofield; and nephews, William and James Skofield; and nieces, Margaret (Skofield) Winters and Elizabeth Skofield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years Mildred (Skofield) Rogers; brothers, George Rogers, Glenn Rogers. James Hill Rogers and Gene Rogers; and nephews, Rodney Ray Rogers and Robin D. Rogers.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2015, at 11 a.m., in Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, May 8, 2015, from 3 to 7 p.m., with additional visitation time on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time.
