Maxine was a part of the College Mound Community for 85 years where she lived, went to school, attended church and raised her family. She was a 1951 graduate of Terrell High School, a lifetime member of the College Mound United Methodist Church and a member of the College Mound United Methodist Women.
On December 10, 1952, Maxine married the love of her life, Jack Owen Tankersley. Together they raised two daughters: Vivienne Tankersley Flowers and Madeleine Tankersley Brown.
Maxine held various jobs within the Terrell Independent School District for 29 years until her retirement. She described herself as a simple person. To her children, 5 grandchildren and extended family she was far from simple. She never met a stranger, her “door was always open” to lend a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, or to simply listen. She loved life and never lost her faith in God. Maxine will always be remembered as a loving wife and the best Mother and Grandmother anyone could ever want. She exhibited love beyond measure and was always there to provide guidance, support and wisdom.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Vivienne Flowers of Terrell, TX, and Madeleine Brown and her husband, Richard, of Anna, TX. She will be remembered as “MawMaw” by her grandchildren: Julie Flowers of Paris, TX, Joni Flowers of Tyler, TX, Brett Brown of Flower Mound, TX, Scott Brown of Houston, TX, and Jana Brown of Fort Worth, TX. She is also survived by her sister, Thelma Sanders of Hallettsville, TX and brother, Homer Winton of Terrell, TX, sisters-in-laws, Ruth Flory of Austin, TX, Frances Tankersley of Terrell, TX and Hope Tankersley of Washington, D.C. as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family and a host of dear friends.
Maxine was welcomed into Heaven by her parents, her husband, Jack, her brother, Orban Winton, Sr., sister, Marguerite Winton Howie, son-in-law Gary Flowers, as well as other in-laws. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider memorials to the College Mound Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 105, Terrell, TX 75160 or to Southwest Palliative Care and Hospice, 13140 Coit Road, Suite 315, Dallas, TX 75240.
