Great man, he was my teacher more than 20 years ago @ Barranquilla. One of the best teachers in my life. 

Mr. Littmann taught government to my two THS seniors. Andrea, then 4 years later Jake. They would in turn tell Mom and Dad about their time spent with Mr. Littmann. Our family loved Mr. Littmann and his senior projects. We discussed them each night at dinner.  Thanks, John, for shepherding my two lambs.  
John gave me two books to read over the years.  Don’t know why.  Maybe he was tired of them.  Maybe he thought I needed them. One was a book on ballistics.  It stayed in my bathroom for years.  I learned the history of so many odd calibers of pistol and rifle cartages.  It was the perfect book for mindless study.  The other book was much more thought provoking. Economics in One Lesson, by Henry Hazlitt. The only sentence highlighted in either of these two books is a quote attributed to John Maynard Keyes. “In the end we are all dead.”  Why did John underline this quote?  The premise of the book was to teach us that our actions have immediate and long-term effects for all groups of people not for self or just one group.

I hear John’s voice when I read these books. Fun, interesting, full of wisdom.

I called John on his birthday and he did answer.  Happy Birthday John!


I called John on his birthday. He didn’t answer. Not unusual.   We always seemed to reconnect.   Catching up on school gossip was our number one topic.  Shannon, John’s daughter, returned my call. It was news I was not ready to hear. I wanted one last visit, one last laugh, one last beer, one last phone call.

My first recollection of Mr. Littmann was at a boys only lunch during teacher in-service August 2002.  Mr. Mac invited me to join their group.  It was Mr. Mac,  Littmann,  Bynum, Smedley and me. We sat at a table at a Chinese all you can eat buffet on State Line. For me, it quickly became a “must do” tradition during each semester of in-service meetings.  I learned more about classroom management during those 45 min lunches than from the hours and hours of in-service meetings that TISD would schedule for us.  I was honored to have been included and blessed to have been mentored by those 4 fine gentlemen.

Don’t remember how it started but over time John and I bonded over guns.  We had a ball shooting together at Smith Park, TXK Gun Club and Maud Gun Club. John had a BIG 40 cal. Colt revolver that to this day still rings in my ears. Thanks, John, for the lasting memory :)   

John showed up on my door step one fall day 11 years ago with a tool belt around his waist and R2D2 under his arm.  (R2D2 was his shop vacuum). My family was amid a full-blown house remodel and John was here to rescue us.  John’s first job was as my “step and fetch it.”  When we got around to laying flooring, I was Johns “step and fetch it.”   There is not a piece of laminate flooring in our home that does not have Johns finger prints on it. He took command of so many projects during the remodel that my family named our new guest bathroom in his honor. For the past 10 years we have had the “John Littmann Bathroom” in our home. No, it’s not open for public tours. Only open for invited guests.  



I am still so humbled, overwhelmed with love and incredibly proud to read all of these amazing tributes.

Mr. Littmann was one of my favorite teachers at Texas high. I had him senior year the first semester for government and he was such a caring and passionate teacher that i decided to enroll in his Texas government class. I enjoyed my year with mr. Littmann and learning about more than just government. He will always have a special place in my heart. 

I’ve waited too long to post something, not because I was unsure of what to say, but because it felt like if I said something there’d be closure to a life event I didn’t want to have ended.
John was like a big brother to me. We had so much in common it was almost funny. There’s only 4 things I ever found different about us: 1. Scotch (blech) 2. Kale (hate it, I think he only tolerated it) 3. Sports (I’m a fan) and..,4. Those infernal ties. I really hate wearing a tie. 
John’s celebration of life was one of the most incredible events I’ve ever had the good fortune to witness. His family described him to a tee. I will always treasure John’s wit and wisdom, as so many before me did. He left an indelible mark on everyone he interacted with. 
One of the many traits John and I shared was a love of good movies and quizzing each other with quotes. I’ll end this by paraphrasing a scene from The Great Santini, “I’d like to tell you Nancy, Timothy, and Shannon that I'll like the world less without John. It'll be a duller, more colorless place. We'll all remember him. And we'll honor that memory.”

My deepest condolences to the family and all those impacted by Mr. Littmann's passing. I hope the following words provide comfort and peace.

I knew John Littmann the majority of my adult life. From walking into his classroom as a senior at Texas High School to being mentored by him while studying to become a teacher, to working along side him, literally sharing a hallway with him. I saw him every morning for coffee as a co- worker. We talked history and politics. We talked about his mother and her time in Europe. Everyone once in a while I would arrive in my room with some book or item that he had and wanted to pass on, would be sitting in my chair. The man that taught me became a friend and co worker. Not many people can say that. He was the reason I decided to become a teacher. I, and many like me, found inspiration in his style and grace in and out of his class. If I were to list off the most influential men in my life who shaped who I was, he would be near the top. Students always tell their teachers, who they love, how much they have impacted them and changed their life. That’s what John was for me. A lot of people saw his passing as the loss of a man. For me, and others, he was no man. He was an absolute legend and one of the finest individuals that I have ever known.

Dear Littmann Family,

My heart is heavy today as I have learned of John's death. My late husband, Dan, taught with him at Texas High School in the Social Studies department. My husband adored John and always spoke highly of him. 

John and Dan were  masterful teachers who used humor to engage students in the daily learning process. I am sure John has walked through the Gates of Heaven and Dan was awaiting him with a smile on his face and open arms. 

What a champion among men. I don't have any lengthy stories, but thanks to Mr. Littman, I will never forget that Steny Hoyer was the House Minority Whip, at least in 2007. I will also never forget Mr. Littman.

I first met John when he was a student teacher at Pine St. with Dorothy Murphy in a classroom of what I think was sixth graders.  He connected with them  but moved on to the high school . As a faculty member I know I was so disappointed that he did not stay with us at the middle school, but his niche was the high school where he flourished.  He was an impressive educator and his students not only finished the giant project but also dressed for success when required, ties and all.  He had an extremely outgoing personality flecked with humor and bravado.  His mustache was legendary and will live on in my memory along with  his personality and tremendous teaching ability.   Rest In Peace John Littmann and say hey to Scott.  I regret that I will most likely not be able to attend his memorial.  His family will be in my prayers.

He was my favorite teacher in high school. I majored in political science in college, because I saw he was teaching some of the classes. I knew I would learn if he was the teacher, and he motivated me to do well. I really admired Mr. Littmann. Great person.

Mr. Littmann was a treasure. He challenged us every day, and made learning fun. I will always think of him fondly.  "Be careful out there"

Mr. Littmann was one one of my favorite teachers at THS. His interest and enthusiasm was contagious. I’m so glad I got to know him. 

This saddens my heart. This is such a deep loss to our community. He touched so many by being the kind and great man that he was. You will be missed.

 Mr. Littmann was my favorite teacher at Texas High.  I even had him in college.  There will never be another like him.  

A good friend and a joy to talk to. Where have all the flowers gone?

Mr. Littmann was my favorite teacher in the mid 90's. I'm now 40 years old and remember him fondly.
