Michael was born on December 14, 1958, and he lived a life filled with hard work, loyalty, service, and connection. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie B. Ray and Aliene Ray; his little brother, Willie Ray Jr.; and his first grandson, Brennen Mikel-Lee Steward. We take comfort in believing he has been reunited with those who went before him, especially those he loved and missed deeply.
Michael is survived by his two older brothers, Kenneth Ray and Donald Ray, and his older sister, Kathy Nicola. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, along with many extended family members who will continue to carry his memory forward.
Michael proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, a reflection of his strength, courage, and willingness to stand for something bigger than himself. He was also a proud member of the America can legion & Masonic Lodge where brotherhood, service, loyalty, and tradition were values he carried with pride.
Throughout his life, Michael worked hard. His career centered around truck driving, where he spent countless hours on the road, and he also helped with his father’s septic tank business. He understood responsibility, dedication, and the value of putting in the work needed to provide and keep moving forward. He was not afraid of hard work, and that was a part of who he was.
Michael and his former wife, Laura Thornhill shared three children: Christi Ray, Sonya Ray Steward, and Bronson “Chubbs” Ray. His children were a meaningful part of his story and legacy. Through them, and through the lives they continue to live, pieces of Michael will always remain.
He was also the grandfather of Hunter Dewayne Gilbert, Landen B. Steward, and Piper Marie Ray. Being a grandfather added another chapter to his life, one filled with family, memories, and the kind of love that continues beyond this life.
Michael also leaves behind a number of friends, including his best friend, Remi, who held a special place in his life. Friendship mattered to Michael. The people who knew him will remember him in their own personal ways—through stories, laughter, shared memories, and the moments that made him who he was.
As we remember Michael, we honor not only the dates of his birth and passing, but everything in between: his service, his work, his family, his friendships, his uniquely crafted personality, and the life he lived. No person is defined by one moment or one title. Michael was many things to many people, and his memory will continue through every person who carries a piece of him forward.
Though his passing brings sadness, today is also a time to remember, to share stories, to gather together, and to celebrate the life of a man who will not be forgotten.
Michael Ray’s memorial service will be held at 237 Pub on June 27th at 2:00 p.m. until, in a potluck-style gathering. It will be a time for family and friends to come together, share food, share memories, and honor his life in a way that reflects connection, community, and a cold beer. Dad wouldn’t have had it any other way.
May Michael rest in peace, reunited with those who went before him, and may those who loved him find comfort in the memories that remain
