She is survived by her son James Albert Gibson and his wife Cordelia Gibson of Houston, TX and grandson Aaron Brice Gibson of Alexandria, VA; nephew Christopher Meredith Witmer and wife Linda; two nieces, Saundra Witmer Martin and husband Bobby; Shryl Ann Witmer Mcdonald and husband Jerry, all of Texarkana; and many special great nieces, nephews and cousins.
She attended the Redwater, TX school district and graduated from the Texarkana, AR High School. She attended Browning Business College in Albuquerque, NM and the University of Houston. She was a bookkeeper for Wholesale Electric Supply Company in Texarkana for ten years before moving to Houston in 1962. In Houston she was manager and accountant for a family estate for twenty years before establishing her own accounting practice, from which she retired in 2001.
She attended, and sang in the choir of Highland Park Baptist Church in Texarkana before moving to Houston. In Houston she attended Memorial Drive Baptist Church where she was a member of the BYKOTA women’s bible class, for a number of years sang in the choir, and for a period taught an adult women’s bible class. During retirement she maintained a second home in Texarkana, AR, where she also attended the Central Christian Church.
She was always active in civic and community activities. She was a member of Soroptimist International of Texarkana and Houston; a member of Business and Professional Women, Inc. of Houston, TX; former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of Texarkana; served as Clerk of Municipal Court, Hedwig Village, Houston, TX; Secretary to Planning and Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment, Hedwig Village, Houston, TX; a member of Hedwig Village Garden club. She was a founding member and charter member of the Texas Court Clerks Association; a member of En Ami Book Review Club of Houston, a participant in the establishment of the Federal Women's Credit Union, Houston, TX; and a charter member of the Gateway Commission, Texarkana, AR.
She enjoyed flower gardening at both her Houston and Texarkana homes. She had a passion for improvement and beautification of her home town Texarkana. Her joy was her family and friends. She was especially grateful to her many friends, neighbors, family, and faithful volunteers in community service who provided companionship and support in her golden years. She approached declining health in her later years with a positive attitude, a smile on her face, and more concern for how it would affect others rather than herself. She touched the lives of many people and made the world a better place.
Her family thanks those who helped in her care during the last years of her life, especially Miriam Olivares; the staff of Tranquility Personal Care Home, especially Isabel, Melissa, Rebecca and Kendra; and the staff of Blue Bonnet Palliative Care, especially Suse Nation and Gwen Rudd.
