

Shelby Wendell Hawkins passed away on January 17, 2012, at the age of 91. He was born on August 24, 1920, to Frank and Jimmie Hawkins in Texarkana, Texas. After a childhood in Texarkana he attended the University of Texas where he received a degree in Fine Arts. He then worked in advertising in Houston. He had a lifelong passion for cars, particularly Packards, and was thrilled to open a Packard dealership in Houston in 1956, where he also sold Rolls Royce automobiles. Wendell was an accomplished singer who sang with the Houston Grand Opera and for many churches and events. A talented artist, with painting as his preferred medium, Wendell also enjoyed teaching art.
For many years Mr.Hawkins has been a enthusiastic member of the Ark-La-Tex Packard Club. He treasured the friendships and activities he found within the club.
Wendell Hawkins was predeceased by his sister Mary Ellen Hawkins (2005) and by his partner C.L.Stinnett (2010).
He is survived by his niece Sally Fuchs of Seattle and his nephew Steve Tebo and by six great neices and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Texarkana on February 3, 2012, at 2:00 p.m.
