She was born in 1932 on Staten Island, New York, to Frank and Amelia Longacre. Ada grew up with her mom because her father died when Ada was just four years old. Through the Great Depression and WWII and the many hardships of those decades, through extreme poverty and tears and laughter, Amelia and Ada developed a very strong bond that lasted until Amelia passed away.
Ada graduated at the top of her class at Curtis High School, and then she went on to Wood Secretarial School. Afterwards, she worked in Manhattan for Ebasco Services until 1962 and then went back to work in 1970 for Eger Nursing Home’s Human Resources department. She moved to Texas in late 1979, and Ada quickly found a job in the Human Resources Department of Houston Northwest Medical Center where she worked for 22 years before retiring. Her organization, professionalism, dependability, and work ethic left a lasting impression on everyone who worked beside her.
In the 1950s, Ada was part of the Young Adult Group at Calvary Presbyterian Church where she organized the social outings and played matchmaker for many of the couples. She met her husband, Jim, in that group, and were married in 1961, and together raised two children. She was active in her church on Staten Island, Bethel Evangelical Free Church, working on the Missions committee and Sunday School and AWANA. In Texas, she was active in her church, Bridgestone Baptist Church for many years. She was also a devoted member of Founders Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Missions Team for many years. Through prayer, organization, correspondence, and encouragement, she supported the spreading of the Gospel both near and far and regularly communicated via email with the church’s many missionaries in order to update the congregation of prayer requests and praises for those in the field. For Ada, her church was not just a place she attended; it was a community she loved and served until the end of her life.
Ada loved working on her computer, and she spent hours inputting and editing copious amounts of data into Quicken, Turbo Tax, Excel, and Microsoft Word. She thoroughly enjoyed her Ladies’ Bunco group gatherings and created a photo album documenting the groups’ social get-togethers. She also took pleasure in watching movies from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s on tv. In addition, Ada had an immense passion for reading and loved Jane Austen and Agatha Christie novels, and she continued to read Regency Romance and Women Sleuths and Detective novels on her NOOK until the end of her life.
After retirement, Jim and Ada cruised to The Bahamas, Alaska, and Nova Scotia in addition to traveling to England, which she enjoyed very much. Jim treated Ada like a princess, and their 65-year marriage became a major cornerstone of her life. She said he always made her laugh.
Ada is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jim; son, Scott Hunkin, daughter-in-law, Carole Hunkin, and grandson Brandon Hunkin; and daughter Pam Hunkin, and son-in-law Doug Boyd, as well as her brother-in-law, Richard Hunkin, her sister-in-law, Mary Hunkin Weeman, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Amelia Longacre, half-brother, Edward Longacre, and sister, Violet Longacre.
