As we recognize the anniversary of the passing of our dear Aunt Alice,  I wanted to express my gratitude to her family for the life she shared with us.  My memories of Aunt Alice always brings a smile to my face as she was one of the most down-to-earth people I have ever met.  She never complained about life and always kept a positive spirit when talking with her.  She offered encouragement to me when I needed it most and I always felt I mattered in her life.  She helped me out when I first got started in my adult years and I will never forget how much that meant to me. 
 My only comfort in her passing is the knowledge that she is with her beloved daughters Denise and Barbara.  Cheers to my Aunt Alice who we continue to miss each and every day.  Love from your nephew David.

I will truly miss Aunt Alice. She was an amazing woman. The loved and care she had for my dad, especially in his last few days will always touch my heart. 

We had a special connection and shared so much that it’s hard to find words to say how much I will miss her. She usually came to visit us here in Georgia once a year and we look forward to each visit. It was especially good to have her here during Paul’s last few days. Our whole family loved her very much and will never forget her.

What can I say my heart is  broken for the loss of her.  I know you are greeted by family members gone before but I will miss you so much.  She was always there for me with open arms. A shining example of strong family unity.  I will always remember her love for boiled peanuts her favorite every time she came to Georgia. She always sent Jenny out to get them for her. 1st order of business. I sent her a video on how to make your own boiled peanuts, She sent me back a text saying how much she loved it, but didn’t know where she was going to find green peanuts in Texas. I will remember and love you  always Aunt Alice  til we meet again.

I will miss my Aunt Alice more than I can express. As I grew up as a child Aunt Alice was the only one qualified to pull my baby teeth. As soon as it began to wiggle, I would go to my dad and tell him that I needed to go see her. She would always comfort me by being so gentle. All I could feel as she pressed against my gums was the the love that she felt for me.  She would ask me, “Are you ready for a little tug?” I would take a deep breath. Then she would show me my little tooth that she already held tightly in her fingers. I never felt a thing. I can not tell you how much comfort she brought to my family with her semi annual visits to Georgia. She has to be one of the best cooks I know. She was the most giving. Towards the end of my dad’s suffering she sat by his bed for days. He enjoyed her company so much.  I love you Aunt Alice! Thank you! You will surely be missed.  Your niece Theresa.

I was 18 yrs old before I really got to know my Aunt Alice. Before  that, she was one of the scary Aunts and Uncles that I would see sometimes at family reunions. You know the old ones probably in their late thirties/early forties.  I was a green and naïve kid who had just moved out of the house and was wanting to start my life.  My first task was to buy a car, a 1970 Toyota Corolla.  The place I bought it from was Jerry Lewis Motors - that should have told me something.  Paid 900 dollars.  I was dirt poor so to me it was a Cadillac.  It would drive like silk up to 50 mph but would shake like a frightened puppy any speed over that.  I really expected the tires to fall off any time.   My mom told me to call Aunt Alice who was working for Jim Ross tires at the time.  To me, that was like saying call the President.  I was scared as I never had interacted much with any of the relatives.  We were the kids who were told to sit on the couch and keep quiet.   I shook my valued clunker down to Jim Ross and it was like the Prodigal Son's father welcoming the son who had left.  Aunt Alice took over as my negotiator and looked after me like I was her own.  I remember her yelling at the mechanic to not cheat me or sell me something that I didn't need.  She haggled discounts that only she could have gotten and from that moment on, I was in love with my Aunt Alice.  She was probably one of the most down to earth people I have ever met.  Every time we saw each other, it was like time had not passed.   I was fortunate to have talked to her for about an hour this past December and she never let on she was not doing well.  She always seemed to have that inner strength that few people possess. She never wore her "Valleys" on her sleeve.  Instead, we talked about family and life and the funny things going on.  She had a beautiful dry sense of humor that I really related to.   Rest easy my dear Aunt Alice.   You made a mark on my life and I will miss you

I want to share some personal thoughts about our sister Alice and her family that loved her.  As she and I were close in age and shared many life experiences in our youth, it will take some time to adjust to her passing.  

Growing up in a large family facing a number of life’s challenges can be difficult if not overwhelming. For the Riley kids, our Christian faith and family support were essential for survival. While we were not a kissy and huggee family, all of us had a deep love and respect for each other. I don’t mean to imply that we didn’t have differences at times because we did. However, those differences never changed our strong family bonding that continued through our adult lives. We learned early on to forgive and to apologize when we offended or felt offended by our siblings.

From an early age, Alice was always a loving, nurturing, and caring person. She can best be characterized as a “Giver” as opposed to a “Taker”. When the family began to relocate to Texas, Alice (as a young teenager) found herself as a surrogate mother to Paul and me. (Not an easy task as I recall) However, she was up to the challenge and continued her maternal qualities throughout her time on earth. 

Our family loved and admired Alice for her giving ways, her wonderful family, and continued faith in our Lord.  While we miss her, we can take comfort in wonderful, shared memories of our times together.  The Lord has blessed us having her as member of our family and has welcomed Alice to her heavenly home.  May God bless her family and loved ones in the days ahead. Amen.
