On May 14th of this year, my amazing wonderful mother, Dr Bertha George turned 105 years old. She passed away last week. On August 14th of this year we celebrated her life. I would like to share some of my beautiful and hilarious memories with you. I shared these at her funeral.

One of my most dramatic childhood memories in India, was standing on the balcony looking down in horror at men fighting on the street with knives. Through the commotion I heard a commanding voice in Hindi telling them to stop acting like children, and I watched in amazement as the fighting stopped and the person started to patch up their bruises. That person, was my mother, the first and only physician in the village.

That scene was even more amazing because my mother was actually a shy person. In her role as physician she was transformed into a force that could handle any situation. She touched the lives of everyone in our village and earned their love, trust and respect. The lesson I learnt is that there are so many sides to our personalities, and it is OK to just be ourselves with our own mix of strengths and weaknesses. As she always said, we are perfect just the way we are.
My mother was an unusual physician. She used medications and procedures sparingly because they all had side effects. Instead she taught us to use food, the mind and exercise as cures. Ginger for the stomach, cloves for a toothache, garlic for the heart and chicken soup for the flu. It worked very well for us through the years. Incredible but true, my Mother did not have any major health problems in all her 105 years.

My mother was a story teller extraordinaire! She exaggerated, she embellished, she put so much drama into each story that it came alive and you could touch feel and smell every incident. When she told us about the snake that was coiled around her baby sister I could feel the unbearable tension as men waited with guns pointed at the snake. When she told us about the lion that tapped at the door at night when the children and nanny were home alone my hair stood on end with fear, and when she told us about the first time she saw a waterfall and thought it was milk and honey and reached out to fill her glass, I could literally taste it. Every night we would beg for 1 more story and later, so did her grandchildren.

She had the amazing ability to find humor in any situation and then she would burst into peals of laughter. Laugh and the world laughs with you, she would say, Cry and you cry alone! When Vijay, my husband shaved his head she asked, Vijay, did Marie pull off all your hair? When she watched me dance in the competition with my 25 year old instructors she asked Vijay, Is this making you jealous?

A few years ago she had a stroke and went as flat as a board. Terrified we called 911. As they were checking her out, her body came back to normal, and she did not understand why everyone was standing around her. They wanted to check out her mind so they asked her questions. In India we have a nursery rhyme that goes like this : what's your name? -Johnny became. Where do you live? -Down the lane. What stop? -Bus stop. They asked her, what's your name? Johnny became, she responded. Where do you live? Down the lane. They turned to my sister and whispered, she has lost it. At the same moment she turned to me and whispered, stupid questions need stupid answers!

In the last couple of years she had lost her memory, but she never lost her wit. When I asked, Who am I? She could not remember then with a triumphant smile she said, you are my darling! She looked at my sister, Are you my mother? No, said my sister, I am your first born daughter! You are always telling me what to do she said, so I thought you were my mother.

How old are you Mama? I asked her. 21, she replied confidently, because that's how young she felt inside. How old are you? When I told her my age she was shocked! How did you become such an old lady! she said. She was already over a 100 at that time!

My mother had a positive gentle spirit and disliked conflict and negativity. Very early in life we learned, If you can't say anything good about a person, just don't say anything at all.

She was an avid reader and knew exactly what was happening all over the world. When she could not read anymore, playing the keyboard and singing gave her the most pleasure and even when she could not carry a tune, we all joined in. The last time we taped her singing was 2 days before she passed away.

We feel lucky to have had extraordinary parents. We never realized how many obstacles life threw in their path because they never complained. They just overcame them and lived life to the fullest. They married late in life my mother was 37, and when they had not 1 but 2 children, they were ecstatic. We were their precious jewels and they loved us unconditionally. The resultwe felt so secure, we felt we could achieve anything if we worked hard enough.

I am eternally grateful to the Angel of our family, my sister Andrea and her husband Bell. My Mother lived with them and they made her the center of our family. Both our families showered her with love and laughter, which is why she lived a Wonderful 105 years.

I'd like to leave you with a bit of her wisdom.

Life is a precious but fragile gift. It can be taken from you in a moment. Live life to the fullest and tell your family you love them before it is too late.

My grandmother has passed away, it was never intended for her to accompany us for the duration of our lives but we have been more than privileged to have had her company for a part of ours. I would like to share a few stories about her. Way before my time, I heard stories of factory workers having drank a little too much showing up at the house in the middle of the night asking for a leave of absence note. It was my grandmother who confronted these men. She was fearless. In the 1990s at the height of the bombay riots with 300 armed men parading on the street in front of our house she suggested that should they breach the front door she would stay with the family dog to slow them down and allow us to escape through the back door. She was fearless. Years later I saw a softer side. When visiting Marol we had the children and grandchildren of her patients coming to pay their respect and share the touching stories about 'The doctor' that their parents and grandparents had told them. She had the soul of an angel and the heart of a lion.
Over the years there were many Sundays that I pushed her wheelchair to the front of the alter for communion and then we went home. Today I again pushed her to the front of the alter, but I'm not going to be taking her back home. She is going to a better place, free from the shackles of a failing body. We are all going to miss her because...she gave us everything.

Dear Marie,Vijay, Andrea and Bel,
Aunty was a lovely person who conveyed love and joy to everyone she met. I fondly remember all the times where she laughed, sang and played the piano beautifully. We will cherish those good memories forever. May her kind soul rest in eternal peace.

Dear Auntie Bertha,

You were my godmother and my favorite aunt.  We (Frankie, Luella, Dwayne) had come to visit you for your birthday a few times before 2006. Following my retirement from the UN in April 2007, I came to Houston every year from 2007 to 2015 to help celebrate your birthday, including your glorious 100th birthday celebration in May 2010.

I remember vividly the times in the early 1960s when my mother Mary (your youngest sister), my dad Peter and the five of us (Frankie, Tommy, Willy, Nirmala, Pradeep) used to drive to Marol village to visit you, Uncle Placid, Alexandrina and Marie.  Your other sister Elaine, her husband Jack and their kids Reggie, Gerald, Jacqueline and Desmond would come also.  Your brother Ernest and his wife Patience would join us. These were beautiful family reunions, and this is a key reason why we first cousins remain so close to the present day.

I have always admired your painstaking devotion to your patients in Marol village, where you were the only doctor. You also doted on your family and loved them dearly.  Despite Uncle Placid passing away suddenly some five decades ago, you kept the family intact and ensured that Alexandrina and Marie continued their education.  

Memories of you singing and playing on the piano/keyboard the old songs from your childhood and your beautiful sense of humor will remain with me always.  You lived 105 glorious years and you passed away gently with your loving family by your side.  You have now been called to your eternal rest in heaven.

Rest in peace my beloved aunt and godmother.  We will miss you dearly and will remember you forever.

We were the only two left of our family. You were also my Godmother. We not only talked to each other on the phone, we sang together all the old songs that only the two of us remembered.

The wisdom and humor Mama shared with us will always be a source of inspiration and joy for our family. One of my favorite memories of Mama is the way she greeted me over the last two years when I went to visit her. "Hello Mama" was the way I would begin and it was followed by "who are you? " from Mama.  " It's Savio" was my reply which was followed by " no... you are so beautiful, you can not be Savio". Then I would have her put her glasses on and look at me. This was often followed by an exclamation of surprise from her and the sentence  "when did you get so old? Savio is a little boy."  We would both laugh as I insisted that I was Savio while she insisted that I was too old and had too rough hands to be Savio. 
In our parents and grandparents eyes, we will always be beautiful young children.

Dear Marie,
I am so very sorry to hear about your mother's passing. 
Remembering the time I lost my mom I recall this dichotomous 
feeling, I thanked God that she wasn't suffering, and simultaneously there was this hollow feeling and ache inside that one of the only person who was always unconditionally there for me was gone and I was suddenly bereft of that sense of a wonderful invisible canopy of acceptance and love always encompassing me.
While I never met your mother, whenever you talked about her it was so evident how much you looked up to and admired her. Certainly she was one lady who was a pioneer and way ahead of her time, and while this might seem inadequate at this point, you were so blessed to have had  such an amazing mother and for a much longer time than most of us.
I don't know how much solace any words of sympathy really offers, it can never really quiet the feeling of loss within, but the warmth of the   myriads of friends surrounding you along with Vijay, Saphira and Kevin will hopefully offer some measure of comfort. 
Marie, I would so very much would have liked to have been there to say goodbye to a great lady, and join in the prayers for the repose of her soul in her new journey, and stand along with all your friends to give you a hug, but Dia is here and leaving on Monday, so tomorrow is the only time we have to take care of some appointments and commitments. So please forgive our absence. and allow us to take you out one night , and let us learn more about your mother.

Losing a mom is so unbearable and words just cannot express and communicate soothing and comforting expression to deal with the unbearable loss. Both Leela and I are readily available in any way that could provide any help to alleviate the pain and loss of a dear one. Although we did not have the opportunity to meet your mother, we are very inspired and influenced by the life she had led and the impact she had on arts, music and more importantly the teachings and the path to success she has imparted on her daughter. The memories she had established and nurtured will give you some comfort and solace in dealing with the loss. Your mother reminds us that life is not about the steps she had taken but the footprints she had left behind in the form of you and your loving family. Mom is always very special and while she has left you physically but unconditional love and guidance will be with you eternally in spirits.
