Charles attended Metairie High School and Louisiana State University where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating college, he was drafted to serve in the United States Air Force where he began his career as lieutenant.
While in high school, Charles was on the honor roll and participated in bowling, basketball, baseball and served as editor of his school newspaper. When Charles turned 19 years old, he met the love of his life Betty Lou Bugg on a blind date. Betty had attended University of Florida and transferred to New Orleans to pursue a nursing degree after her mother passed away. It was there that friends set her up on a blind date with Charles. Six months later, the two were married.
The couple moved back to Baton Rouge so Charles could complete his college degree. After serving in the Air Force, he joined Esso (now Exxon). He enjoyed an illustrious career there and he and Betty made many moves across the country and abroad. Charlie retired from Exxon when he was 55 years old. He and Betty moved to Montgomery, Texas where they built their dream home on Lake Conroe in the Walden community.
Always an active couple, Charles had regular golf dates with his friends while Betty played competitive tennis in the Walden Jackrabbit league. Golf was his passion, and he enjoyed playing into his late 80’s with his sons Scott, Steve and Kent.
Charles reveled in his daily walks with his beloved Shelties. He was also known to enjoy a cigar until his final days. After Betty’s passing, Charles set up chairs in his garage and sat out there daily, inviting his neighbors to join him for conversation.
Charles served as the patriarch of his family and adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He and Betty created priceless memories with their family at their lake house in Walden where he passed on his love of fishing to his sons and his grandchildren. He was also known to “bust a move” on the dance floor at many family occasions.
Charles’ family takes comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved son Scott and love of his life, Betty. His grandchildren will miss the days with their Paw Paw and fondly remember him smoking his pipe!
Charles is survived by his sons Steve Wolford and wife Amy, Kent Wolford and wife Ann, and his daughter-in-law, Kathie Wolford, wife of his late son Scott Wolford, all of The Woodlands, Texas. He took great joy in his grandchildren: Jeff Wolford, Todd Wolford, Kristin Wolford Bullard, Brian Wolford, Melanie Wolford Mazorra, Tyler Wolford, Brooke Wolford, Ian Wellman and Nate Wellman. His family felt incredibly blessed that Charles participated in the lives of his twelve great-grandchildren.
