George is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years, Gaylon Barrosse Liggon and their children, Chad Liggon (Allison), Lisa Zimmerman, Lori Broadrick (Stacy), Keri Burton (Michael); grandchildren, Alexis and Alyssa Liggon, Haley Zimmerman, Skyla and Brayden Broadrick, Zane, Marley, and Sawyer Burton; sister Jacquelyn Schautteet, as well as beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lou Jack Liggon and Lillie Mae Bland.
George attended Cary High School in Cary, North Carolina. Known for his lightning speed, he excelled in both basketball and football, earning him the nickname “Lightning Liggon”. He graduated in 1958 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Army. He continued to play football for the Army while stationed in Korea, and when his service was completed, he decided to re-enlist to join the fight alongside his brothers in Vietnam. When he returned to the States, he enrolled in college at Campbell University, and after receiving his bachelor’s degree, went on to obtain a Master of Science in Geology from North Carolina State University. Opportunities within the oil industry prompted George to relocate to Metairie, Louisiana where he would meet the love of his life and start his family. In 1990, the oil industry once again moved him and his family to Spring, Texas where he stayed for the remainder of his life.
George loved sports. Whether playing, watching, or coaching, he was always involved, especially when it came to his children. He never missed a game, track meet, tennis match, cheerleading competition, or theatre production. Family was everything to him. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan of any sport or activity. He went to as many games or events as he was able to attend. He always looked for ways to bring the family together, whether at Disney World, dinner, or Sunday Saints games. He never hesitated to show his love and support to everyone he loved.
