Horace Derwood ”Sonny” King, Jr., a native Houstonian and recent resident of Spring, Texas passed away on June 11, 2024, at the age of 84 with his wife Nancy and daughter Kathy and son-in-law Bill at his side.
Sonny was born on October 19, 1939, and while attending Jeff Davis High School he met Nancy Ann Greenstein who would later become his wife on June 13, 1959. Sonny was an avid and much accomplished fast pitch softball player, acquiring many accolades in the Houston Area as well as throughout Texas as a pitcher. He loved playing golf and rooting on the University of Houston Cougars, Houston Astros, Houston Oilers and now the Houston Texans. Sonny worked at then Transcontinental Gas Pipeline for 33 years as a draftsman and later as an engineer before retiring. Later, he taught math and served as the Program Coordinator of the Math Lab at North Harris Montgomery Community College which became Lone Star College during his time there. Following his retirement as a professor, he received his calling, studied theology, was ordained as a pastor, and served the congregation of Christ Way Bible Church in The Woodlands.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 65 years Nancy and fur-baby Ginney; his daughter and “favorite son” Kathy and Bill Harvey of Spring, TX; his grandchildren David Parks and partner Mary Schramm of Dripping Springs, TX, Bradley Parks and partner Jen Valdez of Weslaco, TX, Amy Harvey and partner Paul Masterson of Gilbert, AZ, and Ashley and Andrew Pleadwell of LeFroy, Ontario, Canada; his great-grands Evelyn and Maddox; his sisters Becky Newton and Renee Stager both of Katy, TX; his brother-in law Ed and Diana Greenstein of Hockley, TX; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
His family is comforted by knowing that upon his arrival in heaven Sonny for the first time met his mother Carrie King whom he lost as she gave life to him and that he was greeted by his father Derwood King and mother Lois and in-laws Ed and Norine Greenstein along with his grandparents Horace and Betty King and Paul and Lila Richarz.
Final respects can be given on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, between 9 and 11am at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home and Cemetery, 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384 followed by funeral services and a Masonic graveside beginning at 11am.
