James Philbert Potter of Conroe, TX, loving husband of Mary Beth Potter for 58 years, passed peacefully away with his wife and children by his side on August 30, 2022. Beloved father of Michael (Melanie) Potter and Shay (Michael) Triem. Dear grandfather to Jacob (Haley) and Caleb Potter, Haley and Ethan Triem. Proud great-grandfather to Luke Potter. Cherished brother to Donald (Sharon) Potter, and Cathy Brown, as well as the late Robert (Patty) Potter. Brother-in-law to Bonnie (Myles) MacCormack and the late David Allen. Loved by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Role model to all.
James was born March 10, 1940 in East Chicago, IN to Dallas Lawrence and Leta Fay Potter. He was their first child. A short time after his birth, his father Dallas was drafted into the military and was sent to the Philippines to fight in WWII. His grandparents helped raise him until his father returned from the war. James lived in Chicago Heights, IL through 5th grade and then moved to Steger, IL.
James, otherwise known as Jim, began working at a young age as a stocker for The Kroger Company. He graduated from Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, IL and then Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL with a degree in Accounting. Jim was hired back at Kroger after receiving his degree and soon worked his way up, becoming the Controller in Illinois and then later the Controller of the Texas / Louisiana division. After an early retirement, he was hired at Rice Foods in Houston as their Controller, CFO, and then later their Senior Vice President of Finance. He was loved and respected by his coworkers.
While he had many accomplishments in his career, he really shined in all matters related to family and friends. He fiercely loved his family and never missed a moment to let those around him know it. Jim adored spending time with his beautiful wife which included travels near and far. He never missed a game, dance recital, or school event for his children. His grandchildren will cherish memories of spending time with Grandpa in the workshop, picking vegetables together in the garden, family trips, cribbage tournaments, Christmas stocking scavenger hunts, truck rides, and his hugs. He never met a dog he didn’t love and therefore rescued many throughout the years. They in turn loved him. Jim’s grandchildren and future generations certainly have a beautiful legacy that he created through a lifetime of love.
