Marjorie Louise Gartland

Marjorie Louise Gartland, age 93, of The Woodlands, Texas and recently of Commerce, Michigan, passed away January 19, 2016. She was born in Bryan, Ohio on March 8, 1922 and received a Bachelor’s of Education degree from the University of Toledo. Marjorie was married to Frank Briggs Gartland on July 30, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio. Marjorie taught third grade at Northwood Elementary School in Royal Oak, Michigan from 1945 until the birth of her first child four years later. She did not work outside the home after that, choosing to devote her time, love to her growing family and volunteer service within the Episcopal Church. Marjorie is survived by four children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was actively involved in Sunday school and Bible Study programs at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Royal Oak, Michigan. She and Frank moved to The Woodlands, Texas in 1993. She became an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church and served on the altar guild until her health failed. Marjorie’s last several years were spent in Commerce, Michigan. We remember our mother as always active and engaged.

She is survived by her children, Steve (Joanne) Gartland, Jeff (Jo Ann) Gartland, Sue (Ross) Gartland McGill and Nancy (David) Gartland Beal; by her grandchildren, Kelly McGill Olin, Phil Gartland, Mike McGill, Anne Gartland, Sarah Beal-Scheidler and Lauren Beal; and by her great-grandchildren, Briggs, Carter and Beckett Olin, Aurora Gartland, and Molly McGill.

Marjorie is preceded in death by her husband Frank Gartland; parents, Dale and Matie Bowlby; and sister, Betty Connelly. Funeral arrangements will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3901 South Panther Creek Drive, The Woodlands, Texas, 77381. Donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church in lieu of flowers.
