Steven Lee Malpass, 51, lost his five month battle against pancreatic cancer on December 6, 2012. He passed away peacefully at home In Oak Ridge North, TX, surrounded by family. Steve was born on November 13, 1961, in England to the late Senior Master Sergeant (Ret.) Arlen Ray and Brenda Malpass. Steve grew up in a variety of places, but spent his junior high and high school years in Abilene, TX. He has lived the last 22 years in the Montgomery County, TX area. He married Jill Mattix on January 15, 1983, in Spring, TX. Upon graduating from Abilene Cooper High School, Steve attended Baylor University on a full athletic scholarship from 1980-1985. In college, he was a four year letterman in football and was on the Southwest Conference Championship team in 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in August of 1985. Steve was involved in the sale and rental of heavy construction equipment for more than 20 years, most recently at Equipment Depot. Sports continued to be a big part of Steve’s life. He was a coach and referee for six years for the Upward Basketball program at First Baptist Church The Woodlands. He was an avid tennis player and a member of USTA in Houston with a ranking of 4.0. He also loved golf and played every time he had a chance. He was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Baylor athletics. Steve is survived by his wife, Jill, daughter and son-in-law, Mindy and Bryan Kahn of Missouri City, TX, daughter Morgan of Rockville, MD, daughter Megan, his brother Stuart and wife Nadine of Charlotte, NC, and niece Maggie, his brother Scott of Clinton, NC and niece Andrea, in-laws, Gary and Joan Mattix of Spring, TX, sister-in-law, Julie Clark of Greenville, NC and nephews Ryan and Alex Clark, brother-in-law Robbie Mattix of Spring, TX and niece Sarah Mattix. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arlen Ray and Brenda Malpass. The family is very appreciative of the care given to Steve by the Kelsey Seybold Cancer Center, the Phase I clinical trial team at MD Anderson, and the Odyssey Hospice nurses. Visitation will be December 10, from 6-8 PM, at Forest Park The Woodlands. A memorial service will be held on December 11, at 3:30 PM at First Baptist Church The Woodlands.
