Tom graduated as valedictorian from Midland High School in 1961. He attended the University of Texas at Austin followed by medical school at Tulane University, where he graduated with honors in 1968. After a year of internship at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Tom became a Naval Flight Surgeon and proudly served his country in Vietnam. After his service, Tom completed General Surgery Residency at Washington University, Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery residency at The University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. The majority of his private practice was spent in Houston, Texas.
Tom was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and surgeon. He loved spending time with his family and friends, coaching Little League baseball, hiking, skiing, baseball trips with his sons, enjoying gardens with his wife, stamp collecting, reading, running, swimming, playing the piano, and cheering on the Texas Longhorns.
Tom was a member at Houston’s First Baptist Church. He enjoyed serving on mission trips, including a trip to Ghana, where he served as a surgeon for the George Faile Foundation. Tom was an Eagle Scout, a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at The University of Texas, and President of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity at Tulane University.
Tom is survived by his wife, Pam Calhoun; daughter, Laurie Sheddan Harvey and husband, Rob; daughter, Tracy Kuhlman and husband, Brian; son, Tim Calhoun and wife, Tenny; son, Ryan Calhoun and wife, Melissa; son, Tyler Calhoun and wife Franchesca; and his grandchildren, Emily Sheddan, Lexie Sheddan, Lizzy Kuhlman, Max Kuhlman, Juliet Calhoun, Zephan Calhoun, Trina Calhoun, and George Calhoun.
Visitation will be held at Forest Park - The Woodlands on Tuesday, April 14th from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 15th at 10 am in the Chapel at Forest Park. Interment to follow.
