Walter William Dishberger Jr. passed away on May 5th. Loving father and community leader, Walter actively participated in both his church and community and will be sadly missed. He grew up during the Depression in Texas City in a two bedroom home with six family members and got his first job at eight selling watermelons. This would be the beginning of his quest for the American dream.
Walter served in the Army and was deployed to Japan during the Korean War unloading ships. After his discharge, he met the love of his life, Ruth, a teacher in Texas City on a blind date. After graduating from North Texas State with a bachelor’s degree in Business, he became an insurance salesman and later, got into the moving business, eventually moving up to manager for several companies. He finally met his long term dream of owning his own moving business in 1973 and ran his company for the next 23 years before he retired.
Walt was a Republican precinct chairman for many years, served on several grand juries, was a member of the Montgomery County Hospital district, and participated as a very active member in the Knights of Columbus. He was also the best person to ask to secure donations for any charity due to his gregarious manner and expertise in salesmanship.
He loved his pet cats, playing golf, watching baseball, food, bad beer, Willie Nelson, dancing, and being the life of the party. If Dad wasn't on the floor dancing, the party was not happening. But of all that he loved, his love for his wife was what love stories are made from. And that would be seconded only by his love of family and having all of us together.
Walter is survived by his wife of 68 years Ruth, his sons Mike (wife Debra) and Gary (wife Pamela) Dishberger; daughters Nancy Pritchard, Joan Alder, and Carol White (husband Tim); 7 grand children, Amy Campbell (husband Rick), Katie Pritchard, Chris Pritchard, Michael White, Matthew White, Mark White, Trevor Alder, and Emily Alder; 3 great grandchildren, Claire, Elizabeth, and Kaylee Campbell. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Sr., mother Mabel, brothers Henry, Tommy, and Jackie, and sister Betty.
