William (Bill) Joyce Wells went to be with his Lord on November 8th in The Woodlands. Bill has been a resident of The Woodlands since 1989 and was Vice President of Geophysics at Mitchell Energy from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He had traveled the world in his profession as a renowned geophysicist and retired with the intent of seeing all of the sites between the airport and office that he had missed in his busy work schedule. His retirement years were spent touring the United States and numerous cruises.
Bill grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi and attended French Camp Academy, Mississipi. Following graduation he served in the Marines prior to attending University of Southern Mississippi where he met his wife of 60 years. Bill and Joyce married following his graduation and he started his career as a “Doodlebugger” traveling throughout Texas, Colorado, Louisiana, Alaska and ending up in Houston. He was a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicist for over 50 years and also a member of the Geophysical Society of Houston.
Bill was a true patriot loving his country and exemplified the tradition of always being a Marine.
Bill was born on December 30, 1927 and is survived by his wife Joyce, a son, Brent Wells and his wife, Ellen, two grandsons, Kyle Wells of Huntsville, and Wade Wells of Ohio. He was preceded in death by a son, Brad Wells. Bill was proud of his two grandsons, Kyle who followed him in being a member of the Marine Corps and Wade who graduated this past year with Honors from high school and is attending college in Ohio.
Bill loved his family, coaching his sons in Little League Baseball, fishing and hunting. He had a cabin at Toledo Bend where he spent many weekends. He was the consummate football fan being glued to the television set when the Dallas Cowboys were playing having followed them from their beginning in 1960.
Bill was a member of Christ Church United Methodist, American Legion Post in The Woodlands, and Tenneco Retirees Association.
The family will be receiving visitors at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 11th with a funeral service to follow at 3:00pm. Donations in memory of Bill can be sent to French Camp Academy, 1 Pine Pl, French Camp, Mississippi 39745.
