Winnie was born to Lee Roy and Velma (Pritchard) Grisham on August 21, 1933 in Shackelford County near Moran, Texas. She was the youngest of four siblings. Her father died when she was only two years old, and she grew up during the Great Depression. However, none of her hardships would dampen Winnie’s spirit for life. Her life motto was “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” She did precisely that! Winnie lived a full and rich life, influenced by her close-knit family and many close friends. Winnie grew up with a sense of humor in a family who had fond nicknames for everyone. She was known in her family as “Sissy” and also answered to “Kitty'' by her sister, Jane Claybourn aka “Bella.” Her grandchildren know her as Gigi. Storytelling came naturally to her family and here is Winnie’s:
Winnie graduated from San Marcos High School in 1950 and from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1954. She was the twirler for the San Marcos Rattlers, and also became the drum majorette of the band. She was well liked among her peers and widely regarded as a beautiful person inside and out. She enjoyed playing tennis and was the most graceful water skier to ever grace Lake LBJ.
She met her husband, Clyde H. Greer, through mutual friends while teaching in Lake Jackson, Texas. After a brief engagement, they were married in San Marcos, TX, June 13,1958. She and Clyde were true partners in life. She was the silent strength behind Clyde’s many achievements and was the ever gracious hostess. They enjoyed traveling the world together and loving on their cherished grandchildren.
A lifelong teacher, Winnie taught every age from kindergarten through high school. Her obvious love of children made her a favorite teacher among students. She cared deeply for children who were less fortunate and poured herself into helping children of migrant families excel in school. She taught in numerous districts representing nearly all areas of Texas. She spent the majority of her career in Kerrville ISD at Tom Daniels Elementary then retired from Kyle Elementary in Hays Consolidated ISD in 1990.
Winnie was always known for her kind and generous spirit, her unending patience, and her ability to set anyone at ease within the first few moments of meeting her. Her smile never faded and her sense of humor permeated everything she did.
Winnie is survived by her son Brett Greer & Shelly (Kerrville, TX) and daughter Julie Greer Stobbe & Doug (The Woodlands, TX). She has four grandchildren Megan Greer Saleen & Jason (San Antonio), Hunter Greer (Boerne, TX), Connor Stobbe (Katy, TX) and Katie Stobbe (Huntsville, TX). While reunited with her beloved husband and siblings, she also leaves behind a host of devoted nieces and nephews.
Winnie will be missed greatly by the many family members and friends who loved and adored her. Her journey on earth is complete, but her days in glory have just begun.
