My prayers and thoughts are with Jack's family.  I enjoyed  visiting with Jack and his wife during Jack's clinic visits with Dr Roth.  I also was able to take care of Jack during many of his hospital admissions.  Always a smile, a laugh, just a darn good attitude no matter what the situation.    I will miss his smiles and jokes in clinic. Or how he always remembered to ask about my three girls.  Rest in peace Jack.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Jack has played such an instrumental part in so many (previously) young lives and I was lucky to call him boss and all of you friends.  I can only smile thinking of the amazing memories from that lemonade stand.  The dedication we all had was a testament to his fairness, humor and kindness.  There are so many stories to share, and all of them bring a chuckle.  He will live on in all of us.

Dear Mary, Jackie, Joe and Jennifer,

So sorry to hear about Jack's passing.  Have been reflecting on the many terrific memories our families have enjoyed through the years - the lemonade stand (believe I've shared a stand with each of the Costa kids), DSHA and Marquette High, cross-country,  University of St. Thomas, Winona (Jackie - remember our summer road trip?), and journalism and English majors!   

The Amazing Jack Costa taught us how to bargain for ice when there's none to be found on the Summerfest grounds, how to properly greet Tony the Lemon Man (and let's not forget Little Tony), the secret lemonade recipe, the value of a lunch hour at the Wisconsin State Fair spent observing the Ginsu Knife Man, and - more than anything else -  the steadfast laser-beam focus on what mattered most in his life:  Mary, Jackie, Joe and Jennifer.

Welcoming Jack Costa to heaven, I imagine, is a bit like the grand finale fireworks at Festa Italiana - which he'd shoo us all out of the stand to see.

If I had an extra straw for every time I've reflected on the significance of my first real job, shaking lemonade under the watchful eye of Jack Costa… It's the spring of 1985, and we're sitting in Jack's backyard for an orientation – in my memory we are all wearing green shirts but probably that wouldn't have been the case -- listening dutifully as Jack lays out the expectations for his young employees: “I've got eyes all over the fair grounds,” he says ominously, a warning that will replay in my head every time I consider swapping the soda in my Rocky Rococo's cup for something else. “You get a ten minute break. If you come back after eleven minutes, don't bother coming back at all.”  We may have been friends and family, but Jack meant business.  And my favorite: “This is the toughest job you'll ever have. If you can do this, you can do anything.” Yes indeed, it was hard work: crusty with sugar water, dripping with sweat, fingers raw from lemon juice and bleach, hands aching from the squeezer, and no end in sight of the punishing lines of thirsty, ornery, drunk, overheated customers – and we need another 50 pound bag of ice right NOW!  Over the years, when I've encountered a particularly intense patch of work, the kind that infuses my dreams like shaking lemonade used to, I think about what Jack said all those years ago, and I am convinced of its truth. Jack took us seriously, set high standards and fully expected us to meet them.  As a result, we took ourselves seriously as competent employees and capable people -- not just kids with a summer job. I feel lucky to have experienced the satisfaction of conquering hard work at an early age; it set the course for much of what has followed.  And for that, I will be forever grateful to my first boss, Jack Costa.

My condolences go out to the entire Costa family. Jack was a good friend and I truly enjoyed the years we spent together at the state fair. May he rest in peace.
