It is with heartfelt sadness that the Armstrong family announces the passing of Andrew (Andy) Armstrong on June 9, 2025. Andy leaves his loving and devoted wife of almost 49 years, Wynne, his adored and loving children Jackson (Vicky), Gary, Molly (Scott); his beloved grandchildren Findlay, Innes, Zach, and Colin; his brothers-in-law Dick Pitfield (Peggy) and Ian Pitfield (Ebie, deceased); his cousins Sheila Katona (Zoltan) and Virginia Biggar (Michael); his nephews Christopher Armstrong (Justine), David Pitfield (Lisa), John Pitfield (Paul), Geoff Pitfield, Sandy Pitfield, his niece, Lisa Haraba; and his goddaughter, Nadaline Webster. Andy was predeceased by his parents, Beatrice A. Armstrong (née Webster) and Gordon T. L. Armstrong, and by his twin brother, Fred Armstrong, his cousins Barbara and Ronnie Webster, and his sisters-in-law Anne Haraba and Joan Pitfield.
Andy attended Brown Public School and Oakwood Collegiate Institute and later graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1971. He was a member of Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity and the Caduceus Club of Toronto, where he made many dear friends.
Dr. Armstrong was a much-loved family physician, practicing from 1974 to 2010 in Willowdale. Family medicine was his favourite part of his work as a physician. In addition, he worked part-time at the Addiction Research Foundation (now CAMH), and at the emergency departments of the Toronto Western and North York General Hospitals. He was also involved with the outpatient services of the Palliative Care Unit at the NYGH Freeman Centre.
Alongside his private practice, Andy was involved with life insurance and medical legal services. In 1976, he joined the Excelsior Life Insurance Company (later Aetna Canada) eventually becoming Medical Director and Vice-President. He was subsequently Medical Director at Concordia Life, Empire Life and AIG Life Canada. In the 1980s, he was a member of the executive committee of the Medico-Legal Society of Toronto and the Canadian Life Insurance Medical Officers Association. In 1995, he began to consult for the Canadian Medical Protective Association and went on to work as a consultant with many law firms and insurance companies across Canada. Andy was actively involved in the Willowdale community, and with Cubs and Scouts for many years.
Andy was a loving, caring, and kind person and always put his family and friends first. He was also an avid reader and historian. His children always said, “we don't need an encyclopedia - we have our Dad!” He cherished his family and friends and loved family vacations.
Andy has requested cremation and private family arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North York General Hospital, Covenant House, or a charity of your choice.
