Dear Carly and family, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your grandfather. I know that he and your grandmother truly valued all of the extra time you were able to spend with them over these past few months. Be strong and carry on all of those great traits that have been passed down to you from your grandfather. I am sure that he is incredibly proud of the woman that you have become today. My condolences to the Stephenson/Mcghie family. I did not know Mr. Stephenson, but I heard many of Carly's stories and he sounded like a fun loving and caring man. I met Dave through my friendship with his son while they were in the midst of running their construction business in the late 80's. I was working for the York Regional Police and Bill somehow convinced me that since his Dad had never met me, I should show up suddenly at his office one day with a phony arrest warrant and take him into custody. Bill assured me that his Dad had a great sense of humour and would not be offended by the stunt. At the appointed time, I arrived in full uniform with information regarding a warrant apparently taken out by a disgruntled customer or sub-contractor that Dave was having problems with. I walked in the office with a pile of paperwork and asked to speak with David Stephenson. Dave looked up with a completely straight face and casually stated, "He's not here." I pointed to Bill and asked, "Is this his son?", to which Dave replied, "I don't know who that is, I've never seen that guy before." I explained some details of the case and he shrugged and played it off as unimportant. I told him to call me when David returned to the office and Dave assured me that he would call right away. Anyone who knows Dave Stephenson knows he had a fantastic sense of humour and a playful wit that loved a good joke. This joke apparently impressed him and whenever I saw him after that day he always reminded me that he would get me back...someday. I left Canada shortly thereafter but I always suspected that one day, in some unknown city, when I least expected it, Dave would make good on his threat. Now that Dave is no longer confined to his earthly body I'm worried. He joins that great "cloud of witnesses" that watches over the affairs of men from above. The next time something completely unexpected, catches me by complete surprise, and incredibly embarrasses me, I will suspect that Dave has somehow manipulated events to make good on his promise. I will remember his quick smile, his joyful laugh and the obvious love and devotion he had for his wife and family.
