The highlight of every summer of my youth was inevitably the first week of July. Every year that I can recall from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, early July featured my Uncle Eddie and his family visiting Prince Edward Island from Toronto.

That special week invariably meant that I would be playing baseball and soccer with my cousins.  Beaches, amusement parks, and outings, too.  And as a puny, asthmatic child with allergies to nearly everything, it was the week on the calendar when everything was right in my childhood world, and I could enjoy time outdoors with my visiting family without my wheezey breathing ruining my mood.

As the patriarch of my visiting family, my Uncle Eddie exemplified the very tenor of that week.  Casual, fun, humorous, family-centric. Eddie didn’t embrace these qualities merely because he was on vacation.  He and Aunt Marie played host to me many times on various trips that I took to Thornhill.  He was always a fun story-teller, a caring host, and an easy-going gentleman with a spry wit.

Uncle Eddie had a hat—a very distinct yellow cotton bucket hat.  Every year when our families went out together, or when we went to Ontario to visit, if we ever split up in public, that hat served as a beacon that allowed us to find one another.  But really, it wasn’t the hat.  It was the man beneath the hat that helped draw us together all those summers, all those years ago.

I always wished that I lived closer to my uncle. Now that he is gone, perhaps I do.  I am grateful for his influence—an influence of kindness and humorous charm.  I know that he is in the care of the Lord now.  And for that too, I am grateful.  I’m sending hugs and prayers at this time to my Aunt and my cousins. Love you all.

Growing up I always looked forward to summer visits. Uncle Eddie was always a warm happy funny man  with the biggest smile that brightened up the room and will be missed by so many. Sending so much love and prayers to all of my Toronto family during this time. 

Sorry for the loss of my dear cousin. Although we didn't get to see each other often, it was always a pleasure to spend time with Marie and Ed. He will be greatly missed,  but leaves a beautiful legacy and memories for his dear family and friends ❤.

My deep condolences to Marie and Family on Ed's passing. I was a member of Thornhill United for a short time, but I remember Ed's helpfulness and ready smile. I worked on the Countrye Faire and he was there.  He seemed to be everywhere, in fact. In looking at his obituary it turns out he was.  A special man.

I was sorry to hear about Ed's death. He and I were members of TUC's Worship Committee during tough times at the  Church and his contribution was greatly appreciated. I will always remember his sense of humor and will miss him greatly.

We have wonderful memories of Ed's quiet smile over many years of knowing him through TUC.  Marie, your 'memory box' will be overflowing after 56 years together,  We will miss Ed's hugs.

Ed was a sweet, gentle man.  When he saw you, he always took the time to give you a hug and  have a conversation.  I was not at all surprised to read of the many ways in which he supported his church.  He  struck me as someone who would always lend a hand  and lead  with quiet  dignity.  I will remember him with great fondness.

We were very saddened to hear of Ed’s passing. We remember Ed from his participation in the yoga class and also from the ‘sweet tastings’ in the kitchen during preparation for events We always said we had to try them to make sure they were the best for everyone! Of course they were always the best. When we did this he had a twinkle in his eye as if no one knew we were doing this! We will miss his smile, his humor and his soft spoken manner. Peace be with all of you.

Dad holding his first grandchild - his grandson Trent.  What a feeling!  The 'yellow hat' has since been retired.  Trent has a little yellow in his hat though - who knows maybe there will be a continuation of the yellow hat in the family.    

The legendary Yellow Hat.   Dad wore this hat everywhere and it's a good thing too --- As my cousin Nancy, from PEI, recently said: "If it wasn't for this yellow hat - we'd still be lost in Toronto."
