Passed away peacefully Monday October 8, 2012 in his 83rd year in the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto following a struggle with cancer. His wife Mary Patricia (Clarke) Beaton, children James Hector (Dawne), Patricia Margo and Dorcas (Mike Holm) and grandchildren Patrick (Kristin), Kathryn (Ryan), Scott and Heather will fondly remember a dear husband, father and grampa. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, and intelligence by many colleagues and students, and for his love of living things by his beloved pets, birds and fish for whom he built extensive gardens, feeders and ponds ever upgrading them - right up until this last admission. Many a greeting was exchanged with neighbours as he tended this sanctuary! He was never missed in a crowd standing 6'3" and looking a tad like Santa. He is remembered by many shop keepers (Tim's and aquarium shops) and by the farmer's market vendors who sent us home with flowers to take to him. George was raised in Oshawa by parents Hector John and Madeline Ida (Rogerson) Beaton. He is predeceased by siblings Dorcas Madeline (Oshawa) and John Rogerson (Maryland). He worked with his father to review the Beaton history dating back to Mull Scotland in 1774. His first Beaton ancestors in Canada included Hector, clerk for Pickering Township in 1846, (council chambers in Pickering Museum). George left Oshawa to pursue a career in nutrition in the study of vitamin deficiencies and requirements as a professor in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto. He made many contributions to setting dietary requirements aiding in the creation of the Canada Food Guide and working with international organizations (WHO, CIDA) towards improving nutrients in aid for third world countries. He travelled the world extensively for his work and later for pleasure with his wife. In 2009 George was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of his lifelong contributions to nutrition. Along with recognition of the Durham School Board as a noteable graduate (November 2011), this June he received the Queen's Jubilee medal. The family express their appreciation to Dr Robert Nam, nurses and physios on D6 and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for the care and consideration of both patient and family needs during this trying time.
