The Med class of 1962 will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary Reunion in Halifax October 18-20,2012.Leith will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all.Class of 62.

Dear Lorna All of us ex-Wellesley people have been thinking a lot about Leith. I had the pleasure of working with him for 15 years at Wellesley and he was always a presence in our lives. He was meticulous and careful in his work and you could rely on him. Leith and Murray and Dave and I had many enjoyable dinners together on the night of Leafs' games, then headed over to the stadium to do our best for them. During the 6 six I was with the group, Leith personally suffered over the Leafs' trials and tribulations. So he was not only their devoted and professional Plastic Surgeon, he was also a true fan. Leith was always fun loving and an avid student of human nature. It was a privilege to know him and he will be missed. My sincere condolences to you, Lorna, and to your family, on Leith's loss.

Dear Lorna: I always thought of Leith as a brother, not a brother-in-law. I had so much respect for his broad knowledge of so many subjects that we would be discussing into the early hours during our times together he had so much integrity and love of his profession. I was so proud of him the day he took me to see a little boy who had radical facial surgical reconstruction and Leith gave him a new life as he did for so many children. I was saddened to hear of Leith's passing. He was a larger than life figure for many of us who were residents under his tutelage and guidance during the Wellesley Hospital rotations. To see him in "full sail" steaming down the hallways on ward rounds is something I will never forget. He was a great educator and mentor and had an ability to condense surgical concepts and principles into concise pearls of wisdom which one never forgot. He had a wit and an endless stream of "one liners" that would make you double over in the operating room. You could always find Leith at a Plastic Surgery conference or social event as he was always surrounded by residents listening to Leith's most recent stories or his version of the current state of the Universe. He was totally committed to the Maple Leafs hockey team as their prime Plastic Surgeon and would take it personally when they made an early exit from the play offs year after year. Leith "may a fair wind fill your sails as you travel across inviting seas to a safe harbour".

I was a patient of Dr. Douglas, and went "under his knife", so to speak, four times. Dr. Douglas made an everlasting impression on me. He was most considerate, and made me feel completely at ease on every occasion. On three occasions he treated me for melanoma on my back. Thanks to him and my wife for discovering it, I am still around. I note his association with the Leafs. I wondered about that because of two incidents. The first was that when I arrived for a procedure he asked if he could delay for a brief time to look after a Leaf player who was on his way to Chicago. The second incident came about while I was watching a Leaf game. A Leaf player was injured and lying on the ice. A stretcher was brought out accompanied by none other than Dr. Douglas. I exclaimed to my wife, "Look -- there's Dr. Douglas on the ice looking after the player!" The Leafs will miss him as do my wife and I.

Dear Lorna, Ellen and Peter, Jules, Caroline and Liam, our prayers and thoughts are with you in your time of sorrow. Leith was a well respected physician and surgeon, one of my very first mentors in medical school, and I continued to know him as extended family. Roger and I are saddened by his passing, and hope that memories of him and his accomplishments help you through this time.

To the Douglas family: My deepest sympathies go out to you all. I had the pleasure of working with and speaking with Dr. Douglas on a daily basis when I worked in the hockey office for the Leafs. He always made me smile and had a great sense of humor. A very nice man who will be dearly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to you at this difficult time.

As a long time staff member at Dr. Ross Tilley P.S. in Bowmanville, I wish to send condolences on behalf of our staff and students. Dr. Douglas was instrumental in helping us understand more about the important role Dr Tilley played in World War II and after with the Guinea Pig Club. I am sure Dr. Douglas' family and friends miss him greatly and we send you our sympathies.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. I was fortunate to be able to work with Dr. D. at the Wellesley in the 1970s & 1980s as a staff / charge RN in ICU & Emerg. then as a Nsg. Mgr. in Outpatients. When he was talking to staff he always filled the room with laughter, caring & pure joy !! With patients, he was always respectful, honest & very skilled !! He was one of the rare staff surgeons who saw patients himself in Emerg at all hours of the day or night. Personally, I will always remember how kind he was to me when he came to my goodbye party. I was deemed redundant in the new restructuring as a manager, after being at the Wellesley for twenty years. I do hope the good memories you have & that people share with you will help you through this very difficult time.

I will always treasure the kind comments he made on my behalf at the Guinea Pig Convention in Hamilton when he told the GP's that after all these years of being the lone sailor in the group, he now had a winger. Dear Mrs. Douglas: Dr. Douglas saved my life in the mid eighties with a very difficult melanoma extraction from the centre of my back. Because I was in good physical shape he utilized some "Russian" procedure leaving me very healthy and gratefully alive with a "Z" scar which I proudly have on my back. Dear Lorna, Gail and I were very sorry to hear of Leith's death. He was a good friend to us and a very highly valued colleague for Gail for so many decades. Working with him was truly one of the high points of her career. I will always remember his toast to her at our wedding; it was well done and contained a certain amount of good advice for a new husband. Please let me know if I can do anything to help.

I would like to pass on my deepest sympathies and condolences on your loss. Leith Douglas was the first surgeon I worked with when I did an elective in Plastic Surgery at the old Wellesley Hospital. As a first year medical student, I was in awe of his skill and style and did my best to make a positive impression, think ahead and stay out of his way as I hoped one day to follow in his footsteps. That approach continued through my residency years and seemed to work the best around him. Throughout my years as a Plastic Surgeon, there is barely a week that goes by where I don't think of something that I learned from Leith - his distinctive philosophies are channeled through me from time to time to my own residents and fellows although I am certain I don't do them justice. I would like to say that I am immensely grateful for his guidance and expertise and although my contact with him over the past few years was sporadic, he left a big impression on me and the division of Plastic Surgery was a better place for having him in it. To the Douglas Family I was very saddened to hear about Leith's passing. While I never had the pleasure to work with him as a resident, we did overlap at SMH when I was just starting my career. He was kind, fun loving with a great sense of humour and great east coast expressions, which as a Cape Bretoner, I loved. I also got to work with him on the Ross Tilley Foundation where his love of plastic surgery and its future was evident. I will miss him at our plastic surgery events and I will always cherish the picture I have of the two of us at his SMH retirement. What I will remember most is his pure love of life!

I first met Leith back in 1975, when I was his resident at the Wellesley Hospital. Over the years, Leith became my teacher, mentor, and ultimately partner in the practice of plastic surgery. He served as a cornerstone to my surgical development, and to the development of a huge number of other residents who trained under him at the University of Toronto. Mrs Douglas and family, I am deeply saddened to hear of "Leithal's" passing. We had many good times while he was working for the Maple Leafs. Our mutual enjoyment of the American Civil War and other historical sites made travel during the playoffs a lot of fun. It was also quite a treat to watch the big fellow sit down to a meal. My goodness he did love good food and an ale or two. I am sorry I cannot be with you this weekend but the Leafs have games out of town. i am saddened by the news of Dr Douglas passing. I was a neurologist at Wellesley from 1973 and worked in the burn unit from time to time with complications there and saw patients with him over the years. More recently I have been at St Michaels hospital; Dr Douglas came as a patient from time to time and we would chat about the Wellesley days and mutual acquaintances. Dr Douglas was a superb surgeon and a kind and compassionate man of so many wideranging interests. Dear Mrs.Douglas and family, I am very sorry to learn that Dr.Douglas has passed away. I count him among a small group of my former mentors that have had a lasting effect on my career as a plastic surgeon.
