Generous and welcoming to all, Margaret passed away peacefully following her 90th birthday. Predeceased by loving parents John Henry and Mary Anne and sister Joan Reed (UK), and by loving husband Leonard George (FRHS-Kew, NPD, 1956). Proud mother of David (Margaret), John (Katherine) and Mari (Robert), and grandmother to Reed, Marc and Julia, and G.G. to Jasmine. London born, Margaret joined the UK civil service at age sixteen, working in London throughout WWII with Public Works, contracting reconstruction work. Her family home's roof was blown off in the blitz. Accepting an airmail proposal, she arrived in Canada in 1946 to marry her childhood friend Len and build their home and gardens on a veteran's acre in old Thornhill. Founder of a War Bride group, member of the Thornhill United Church (60 years), Richmond Hill Naturalists, Royal Canadian Institute and Women's Institute. Supporter of compassionate and environmental causes of all kinds. A remarkable correspondent, she had a veritable commonwealth of friends around the world, many of whom she visited after retiring from the University of Toronto (26 years, Forestry and Botany, Glendon Hall). She maintained her centuries-long family tradition in horticulture, as Life Member of the Thornhill Garden and Horticultural Society (President, Secretary) and Honourary Member of the Alumni Association of the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture. Her family stands inspired by her devotion, independence and personal strength, and wishes to thank the friends and medical practitioners who helped Margaret endure lifelong physical challenges, and pass to Glory in her own home. If desired, memorial donations to the Alumni Association of the NPC School of Horticulture Foundation, P.O. Box 263, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 6T3, or charity of your choice, would be appreciated. A memorial service will be held Friday, 16 July, at 2PM at Thornhill United Church (25 Elgin Street, Thornhill).
