Hello Marni and Heather, I was so sorry to read of your mother's passing last week. We were on a vacation out west when I read the notice in the Globe and Mail. I was a great admirer of both your mother and father. I was Vice Principal at Huron Heights S. S. when your father was principal. Your father was one of a very few individuals who could single-handedly turn a school around. He did just that at Huron Heights. Working with your father was a combination of pleasure, hard work and fun. It was an experience I will never forget. The office staff of HHSS had some marvellous parties at you parent's house. Your mother and father, in so many ways, helped to gel our administrative team in to a very cohesive unit. They always spoke so proudly of both of you. Marni & Heather: January 13, 2009 I was deeply saddened to learn from Charlie Seath on Sunday of your mother's death. Since then a number of memories have flooded back and I would like to share two or three of the more poignant ones with you. I first met your parents in the fall of 1961 when I joined the staff of the York Central District School Board as Vice-principal of Bayview S.S. The friendship grew when, a few years later, I was transferred to Thornhill S.S. as principal and was associated with many excellent teachers like your father, Beverly O'Shea, Barb Rowe and Bob Templeton to mention a few. Bill's leadership qualities were subsequently recognized and he was named principal of Thornhill and, in the fall of 1971, he accepted the challenge of principal of Huron Heights. A few years later he was named Superintendent of Area 2 and subsequently, as I recall, Superintendent of Human Resources based in the head office in Aurora. It was a sad day when we learned of his death in May 1993 some 3-4 days prior to the office group's winning over half a million dollars in a Lottario draw. I remember picking up Marlene and Betty Stanley and meeting Dorothy Street and Ed Cottingham at rhw lottery office on Bloor Street at Yonge. Other members of the group were on holiday and were contacted at a later date to receive their share of the top prize. I wondered why I had received no Christmas card from Marlene this year. She always seemed so young! I am no longer mobile and would have some difficulty in joining you in the Celebration of Marlene's life tomorrow afternoon. But I will be in your thoughts. Please accept my cpndolences and extend them to your husbands. Your children will miss their grandmother. She spoke of them at every opportunity. She was very proud of them. And of you! Marni and Heather ~~ There are so many of us that will say the best years of our lives were our discovery years during high school. Your mother and dad were two of the best at keeping us on the straight and narrow while we students "pushed the boundaries" at Thornhill High in the early 1960s. We are saddened by the loss of your mother. The finality of losing your second parent is especially painful but we know you will be strengthened and sustained by happy memories of her during this time.
