With great sadness deepest condolences from the old Carrville gang

Deepest condolences to the Ward family, from the family of the late Dr. Neville Bayer.

One could not help but love Mike for many reasons. But there were two above all. The first was that, like all the Wards, he was just so absolutely genuine—not the shadow of any pretense. Open, honest, and genuine. A quality that you don’t really appreciate the importance of until seen so purely in someone like Mike. I always enjoyed my conversations with Mike. Whether I had not seen him for six months, or six days, they always included the same things: a bit about his work, a lot about wildlife, some about a new gadget, and always a great, great deal about his children—what they had been doing, what he had been doing with them, what he and Suzanne planned to do with them. And when he spoke of them his love just shone…..and shone…….and shone. And that was the second reason one could not help but love Mike. I don’t pretend to know what happens to us after this life, but if there are birds and gadgets, then Mike will be content. I will miss him. I hope to see him again, down the road. Bye. And may his love always shine on all his family.

I am very suddened by MIchael's untimely death. He was a remarkable individual, with unique sense of humor, always cheerfull, always witty. His professional accomplishments were many and of the highest caliber. Please accept my most sincere condolences on his passing. Victor Hoffstein

I first met Michael when he visited our research group in London, Ontario while he was still in Montreal. We met intermittently over the years and always had great conversations about science and also sailing when we discovered we shared that interest. On behalf of the Intensive Care Unit doctors at Toronto East General Hospital, I offer our condolences for the passing of a very respected colleague and admired teacher. We offer our prayers to you - his family - during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathies and thoughts go out to Suzanne, Andy and girls. There are many things I will remember Mike fondly for, but in summary, he was the only individual I know capable of combining a caring, sympathetic response, a cutting remark, a profane joke and a brilliant, insightful scientific observation all within a span of 7 sentences. I will remember him for his passion for outdoors/gardening, his zest for life, his individuality and eccentricities, his scientific legacy and for his love of his family and pride in his children. I am grateful for having worked so closely with him this past year and will miss him immeasurably. I will do my best to keep his office garden alive and well.

Our hearts go out to Suzanne and the children and all of the Manning and Ward families who will miss Michael so deeply. Moe remembers the wonderful talks about science and everything else he had with Michael accompanied by beer and wine over the years at the Manning events. Nadine remembers the time when Marion Manning was ill at one of the Manning Christmas celebrations. Michael listened to her coughing and said " I am a respiratory guy and I think we should be looking for those lungs on the floor". Michael, your courage, intelligence, humour and love of life are our memory of you.
