With love and sadness the family of Dr. Michael Ward (April 17, 1956) wishes to announce his passing on the eleventh of November, 2009. Cherished husband of Suzanne (Manning); beloved father of Susannah, Andrew, Emily and Charlotte; kick-ass brother of Maureen (Brian, Jessie, Liam), Joel and Jim; shit-disturbing longtime friend to Barry Mason, and valued member of the extended Manning family.
Michael graduated from Queen's Medicine in 1981 and completed residency programs in Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto in and Respirology and Intensive Care Medicine at McGill University. He also obtained his PhD in Experimental Medicine from McGill University.
As a clinician-scientist Michael worked for many years as a critical care physician at the Royal Victoria Hospital and as research scientist at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories in Montreal. In 1999 the Wards moved to Toronto where Michael was appointed Research Director in Respirology at St. Michael's Hospital where he also worked as a critical care physician.
While Michael's contributions to the scientific community are many, he will be equally remembered for his wit, humour and compassion, as well as his zest for life even after a lengthy battle with cancer. He loved nature, he was a guitar-player and avid sailor, but above all he was a devoted father, loyal friend and brother, and loving husband.
Michael's family would like to extend its gratitude for all the concern and caring of his colleagues at St. Michael's hospital, and in particular the support of Dr. Robert Hyland throughout his illness. They would also like to extend thanks to Dr. Sluzar and the wonderful staff at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie for Michael's care.
Michael, you are missed more than you could ever have known, and in our hearts forever.
