He was husband to his late wife and our late mother, Verna, with whom he shared almost thirty-four years of loving and devoted marriage.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he was the son of Elizabeth and James Whiteman and brother to Florence and Henry and attended a Catholic high school in the city from which he graduated with high academic standing. A talented athlete, he enjoyed competitive sports including soccer and swimming. Following high school, he entered teachers’ training in Cape Town from which he achieved high standing as well in both the written and practical teaching components of the program. He and his wife moved their family to Canada in 1964 whereupon he obtained employment at Quebecor in Richmond Hill, Ontario, where he worked for thirty-one years until his retirement in 1995 after assuming a supervisory position for a good portion of that time.
A devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, son and brother, his other interests included opera, fishing, photography, soccer and tennis, writing about his experiences and memories of his youth in South Africa, along with woodworking and house-building.
