King, Ontario
July 14, 1918 - March 12, 2016
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Philip Arthur Sherwood. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Dad, Grampa and Uncle Phil, he was always a patriarch of the Sherwood clan.
Loving father of Theresa (Steve), Daniel (Tannis) and David (deceased); he will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Alex, Andrew and Ariana. Philip was predeceased by his wife, May in 1983 and devoted longtime companion, Doris Paul, in May, 2014.
Philip was in the RCAF, where he was stationed out west, met and married May Barrick in 1945. When he returned, he was determined to make a difference. He worked for Cresswell Pomeroy Windows, learned the ropes and in 1953 started P. A. Sherwood Windows. He initially had the business at 26 Advance Rd. in Toronto. He leased space to Dimpflmeier Bakery, who owns the building today. This began his career as a landlord. In the 60s he bought 10 acres in Rexdale and built a larger factory for the business. He then 'built to suit' many industrial facilities for various tenants and created Philip Sherwood Developments Ltd.
In 1962, he collaborated with various people to design and build his pride and joy, his Georgian home in King. Friends and family will know the pleasure he had welcoming one and all to his country estate, where his wife, May's passion for horses got them started breeding thoroughbred race horses. Highlights were breeding Champion Good Old Mort in the 60s and 1970 Queen's Plate winner Almoner. He also raced his own horses in the 80s. Phil was the president of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society in 1973 and 1974 when the sales barn stalls were built. His construction background was of great value. In 1989, he received the Mint Julep Cup for his contribution to the horse racing industry.
All in all a very full life of 97 years, Phil was a force to be reckoned with for 97% of that! He was an avid gardener, music lover and occasional fly-fisherman. He loved to spend time in Florida in the winter, but not too long...he didn't want to get bored!
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 18th at Sherwood Farm from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Please call 905-859-3806 if you require directions.
.Philip will be laid to rest at a private family Memorial at the All Saints Anglican Church in King City in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or any other charity of your choice
