Sam was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland to James and Janet Lynn. Father James died in 1954, so he was brought up along with 2 sisters, Anne who died in 1984, and Margaret who lives in Ontario, Canada. Mother died in 1994 and was buried in the family plot in Rydenmains Cemetery in Airdrie where his remains will finally be laid to rest beside his family.
He was always happy-go-lucky, good natured, and in maturity helped many people who were less fortunate or just needed help. He joined the Army at age 15 ½ …the commanding officer promised my mother that they would teach him a trade etc. Well, after completing Boy’s service and graduating into the Cameronians, he was asked “What would you like, drummer or piper” he chose drummer and was immediately transferred to piping! He got on with it, achieved much, and played for many dignitaries including the Queen (his favourite lady) over the years. He was deployed to active duty as a soldier, Aden, Germany, Ireland, always returning to Redford Barracks in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the unit was disbanded in 1968 and they were transferred to other units. He was a loyal and true Cameronian to the end. There were many stories he shared with me, some really hilarious and some, well we won’t talk about.
He came to Canada in 1975 and immediately joined the Lorne Scots Regiment where he taught and worked, was a member of the Band until he retired. He loved working with the recruits and teaching them the tricks of the trade in all aspects, be it Banding or Soldiering on their many weekend retreats.
No doubt he will be sorely missed, but as is pointed out to me, he has gone to Valhalla in the Sky which is for Soldiers. I am sure he will have met up with his buddies and is having a ball.
Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard, but always near
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
